One of the appeals of living in a small town is that the amount of crime is generally less, and that’s why it’s all the more jarring when a business in Peterson experiences a break-in.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Nov. 15, the Peterson American Legion was broken into. Assailants took an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the scene.

According to a Facebook post by the Legion, at roughly 4:45 a.m. a suspect who was 5 ft. 8 in. and roughly 180 pounds fled the scene after a car driving by spooked them. The post said the suspect escaped in a light colored SUV.

Shortly after this happened, Mark Mathison, the janitor for the Peterson American Legion, came upon the scene. He called the club manager, Debbie Brink, as well as the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department.

When Brink arrived on the scene, several officers were already there and had begun their investigation.

“I’m saddened by it,” Brink told the Tri-County Record. “I hope whoever it was gets caught, and justice is served. But we’re a small community, we’ll bounce back.”

If anyone has more information, they are encouraged to contact the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Department at 507-765-3874.
