It’s that time of year again; the time of sentimentality as high school seniors reflect on the years of hard work that lead to one single day, graduation. At the 2015 graduation ceremony in Rushford-Peterson school’s gymnasium, 56 seniors walked the stage to receive their High School Diplomas.



  • “Fillmore County is our nice quiet patch,” said R. Ross Reichard, M.D., from the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner Office.

     
  • Spring Grove School Board member  to run for Minnesota House in District 28B

    Thomas Trehus, Spring Grove School Board member and fifth generation Houston County resident, announced he will run for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 28B.

     
  • The Fillmore County commissioners heard several reports throughout their board meeting on Tuesday, May 26. First, they received a biannual report from Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust (MCIT) risk management consultant Robert Goede before moving on to reports from several county departments. 

     
  • Yost J. Hershberger, 23, of Decorah, died Thursday afternoon after becoming trapped between a logging trailer and a large truck in rural Mabel.

     
  • In the May 19 City of Rushford Village Council meeting, the council approved an item discussed in previous meeting concerning pavement management.

  • Warm, sunny weather needed for area farmers

    Warm, sunny weather is what most residents living in southeast Minnesota are clamoring for. And that certainly includes area farmers. While much of the state came into the 2015 planting season in a moderate to severe drought status, this corner of the state received enough precipitation last fall and winter to place us in the “adequate” classification when the spring reports were released. With the copious amounts of liquid from the sky that we received during the past six weeks, southeast Minnesota's soil moisture is now rated as normal to surplus.

     
  • The May 13 Peterson City Council meeting began the same way that the most recent City of Rushford Village city council started, with a presentation by Vern Bunke, head of Bluff Trucks. 
  • It is no secret that tension has been high in concern to the new school issue and the referendum passed in November. Several community members addressed concerns related to the new school at the R-P school board meeting last Monday night.



     
  • The Rushford Economic Development Authority (EDA) spent considerable time during their May 13 meeting discussing the pros and cons of approving a number of loan guarantee and forbearance requests.



     
  • Himlie, Pederson say goodbye to R-P School after more than three decades

    Joe Himlie has been taking care of the R-P high school and elementary school for 31 years. This year, he’s hanging up his career as he reaches the rule of 90.



     
  • Reflecting on a year in America

    Damla Isik has spent the last year acclimating to not just one American school, but two. Isik, originally from Istanbul, Turkey, is one of the members of the foreign exchange program. For the first semester, Isik spent time in Blair, Wisc. She relocated to Rushford-Peterson high school midway through the schoolyear.



     
  • New bike tune-up stations on local trails

    The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has installed 31 new bicycle tune-up stations in state parks and on state trails, including eight on the Root River/Harmony-Preston state trails.

     
  • Residents in Fillmore County are invited to a public meeting on Wednesday, June 3, regarding the discovery of emerald ash borer (EAB) in the county. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Montini Hall in Rushford. The hall is connected to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 105 North Mill Street.

     
  • Reviewing quotes and bids for equipment dominated discussion during the Tuesday, May 12, Fillmore County commissioners’ meeting.
