The Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson wrestling team has been oh-so-close in recent competitions, but has had trouble pulling out the win.

In a duel held on Jan. 25 at Plainview-Elgin-Millville, LARP was unable to bring down P-E-M, falling 28-39. On Feb. 2, LARP conceded a narrow victory to Caledonia-Houston, 32-39.

LARP vs. PEM

LARP had six winning wrestlers, but dropped eight matches to the Bulldogs.

Sam Puetz (160) and Ethan Sense (170) were both able to score falls over their opponents. Puetz brought down Alex Rahman in 1:22 with Puetz scoring only a takedown before the pin.

Sense started his match against Connor Jones with a takedown as well, but Jones score an escape. Sense responded with another takedown and was able to score a pin in 1:32.

Ross Herber (106) was able to score a 19-2 technical fall against Kale Lamb in 5:17. In the first period, Herber scored three takedowns while Lam escaped twice. In the second period, Herber scored a reversal out of the bottom position and two 3-point nearfalls. In the third period, Herber again scored a reversal and finished out the match with a 3-point nearfall.

Reece Riebel (138) was able to score a technical fall against Lafe Aarsvold in 3:45. Riebel came out swinging with a takedown, two 3-point nearfalls, and a 2-point nearfall. Riebel had two 3-point nearfalls.

Carter Jonsagaard (113) scored a 6-3 decision over Garrett Olson while Gable Speltz (120) did the same against Nick Miller. Jonsagaard scored a takedown in the first period. In the second, Olson escaped out of the bottom position and then scored a takedown, which Jonsagaard was able to reverse. In the final period, Jonsagaard added his final two points scoring a reversal out of the bottom position.

Speltz started the first period with a takedown but neither wrestler scored again until the third period. Miller escaped out of a bottom position and then scored a takedown. Speltz was able to reverse it and then he scored a 2-point nearfall.

LARP vs. Caledonia-Houston

Against C-H, LARP had a closer shot as they had three wrestlers score pins and also netted one forfeit, though they gave up two. Herber took down Kaleb Cavanaugh in 57 seconds after scoring an initial takedown.

Jonsagaard scored a pin against Jacob Cripps in 1:42. After a slow start, Jonsagaard took advantage of an opening and scored a takedown before pinning Cripps for good.

Dominic Jenkins (145) scored the final pin for LARP against Isaac Denstad in 4:29. Jenkins had a takedown in the first period. In the second period, Jenkins escaped a bottom position and scored a takedown. Denstad started to come back in the third period, scoring a reversal and a 2-point nearfall. Jenkins scored a reversal before finishing the match with his pin.

Speltz was able to score a technical fall against Eric Mauss in 5:07. Speltz went 16-1 with a busy first period. Speltz started with a takedown, which Mauss escaped from to score his only point. Speltz then scored another takedown, a 2-point nearfall, and a 3-point nearfall.

In the second period, Speltz escaped a bottom position and scored a takedown and then a 2-point nearfall. In the final period, Speltz was awarded two points due to penalties and was awarded the win.

Noah Herber (195) was the final LARP winner with a 12-5 decision over Mason Staggemeyer. Herber scored an initial takedown in the first period. In the second period Staggemeyer scored a reversal out of the bottom position, but Herber was able to escape. Herber then scored a takedown from which Staggemeyer was able to escape. In the third period, Herber scored a reversal followed by a reversal from Staggemeyer. Herber scored one more reversal but then followed a 3-point nearfall.

The wrestlers will face St. Charles on Feb. 8, and section competition begins on Feb. 15.
