Donald E. Sikkink, 89, formerly of Harmony, died on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born on April 27, 1928, and was raised on a small farm in southeastern Minnesota.

He attended the Bristol Grove Country School, Harmony High School and Central College in Pella, Iowa before being drafted into the United States Army.

Upon his discharge he entered the University of Minnesota in the summer of 1947. Using the G.I. Bill, work, teaching assistance-ships and research grants, he completed his bachelors degree in 1949, his masters degree in 1951 and his Ph.D. in 1954.

He taught freshman speech courses and coached debate at Stanford University. In 1956 he moved to South Dakota State University where he coached debate and was head of the Department of Speech and Theater. From 1963 to 1990 he chaired the St. Cloud State College (SCSU) Department of Speech and Theater, was dean of their College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and directed the study-abroad program in Aalborg, Denmark with his wife, Arlene. He returned to SCSU and served as dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities, directed the overseas studies programs for SCSU and was interim vice president of academic affairs.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Arlene Angel Sikkink; children, Jeffrey, Kathryn, Lynn and Julie and seven grandchildren.
