Third-seed Mabel-Canton outscored visiting Lyle/Pacelli, 91-58, in the Section 1A football opener last Tuesday night. That combined 149 points surpasses the previous state-record of 128 points, according to the State High School League online records.

The game ended in a back-and-forth scoring duel, but the sixth-seeded Athletics joined the race too late to catch up. L/P managed only one first down while the Cougars scored the first 34 points. The Athletics were able to cut that deficit in half, twice back within 17 points at 47-30 and 61-44.

Not counting a one-play possession at the end of the first half and taking knees at the end of the game, M-C scored on all 13 possessions.

The teams combined for 1,132 yards of offense plus three touchdowns scored on kickoff returns.

M-C was able to return only three kickoffs, two for touchdowns — 81 yards by Wayne Ross and 75 yards by Keyser Wenthold. His kickoff return came back-to-back following a 79-yard touchdown return by L/P's Jordan Cotter. With the only returnable L/P punt, Wenthold ran it back 25 yards to midfield.

It was almost all passing for L/P and all rushing for M-C.

Cougar quarterback Wesley Richert completed one of six passes for four yards while handing off 65 times for 655 yards. That is the Cougars' best rushing total in eight years (going back to 705 versus Nicollet in 2006).

Consistently opening holes up front were linemen Donnie Lind, Pierce Lind, Josh Vatland, Alex Mengis and Bailey Vickerman.

Weston Whalen carried 20 times for 284 yards, scoring on a two-point conversion plus four touchdown runs of six, 40, 50 and seven yards. Ross also had 20 carries for 176 yards, including three extra-point runs and three touchdown jaunts of four, eight and 24 yards. Wenthold ran 15 times for 166 yards with three touchdown runs covering 44, one and 29 yards.

With an empty backfield and four wide receivers most of the game, the Athletics ran only 14 times (56 yards) while airing out 58 passes (421 yards). L/P quarterback Jordan Hart did not connect on any of his first six passes, including an interception by Whalen.

But Hart caught fire and finished with 37 completions (56 attempts) for 420 yards and six touchdowns (and five extra-point passes). It was primarily a short-pass-and-run attack; one screen pass went for a 64-yard touchdown.

Jordan Cotter caught 11 passes for 127 yards, including two touchdown receptions covering 64 and five yards. Daniel Bollingberg caught only four passes for 105 yards, including a 65-yard scoring play. Braden Kocer had 16 receptions for 98 yards with touchdowns on seven- and four-yard plays. Taylor Wobschall gained 87 yards with six receptions

Hart was sacked twice by Pierce Lind and Donnie Lind. Donnie Lind also returned Hart's fumbled snap 31 yards to set up the final Cougar touchdown.

Including a 42-18 win back in week two, M-C has now won all 12 games ever played against L/P.

The season ended for the Athletics at 2-7 while the Cougars (6-3) advanced to the section semi-finals for the first time in three years.
