It took the Lady Falcons four sets against Houston (3-1; 25-5, 22-25, 25-9, 25-11) and three sets against Wabasha-Kellogg (3-0; 25-15, 25-17, 25-22) and now they get a shot at Mabel-Canton in the 1A East Sub-section finals.  The sub-section finals is a re-match of the 2013 title game, when Fillmore Central downed the Cougars 3-1; 18-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19.  The Cougar-Falcon match-up is scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Mayo Civic Arena, Rochester.

In the win over the Hurricanes, Sammi Bakke led the team with 13 kills and a hitting average of .345.  She also had 3 ½ ace blocks and was 13/13 at the service line, with two ace serves.  Leah Scheevel had 11 kills and hit .250.  Morgan Malley had 33 set assists and was 12/13 in serving.  Other fine serving performances were by Sara Schultz (26/28, 5 aces), Tayah Barnes (10/10), Paige Bennett (17/17, 2 aces) and Shelby Ebner (12/14, one ace).

Defensively, the Falcons were 39/40 in serve receive (SR), led by Sara Schultz (15/15), Tayah Barnes (9/9) and Taylor Sprenger (9/9).  Sara Schultz was also tops in digs with 17, followed by Tayah Barnes, 10, Shelby Ebner, 8, Morgan Malley, 6, and Paige Bennett, 5.  Paige also had five kills and led the team with 30 hitting attacks.

The win over Wabasha-Kellogg was sub-standard, statistically, but the team did scratch out the win.  “I didn’t think we played our best game,” said coach Travis Malley, “but we played good enough to win.  I thought our defense played great and we served good.” He continued,  “Our seniors all stepped up and played great.  I think their playoff experience showed up and helped us to victory in that third set.”

Team-wise, the Falcons serving was at 70/73 (95.9%) and SR was at 95.3% (41/43), both above team averages.  Season average for serving is 93.1 percent and their SR is at 92.1 percent. Individually, for serving, Tayah Barnes (16/16), Sara Schultz (11/11), Sammi Bakke (10/10) and Paige Bennett (10/10) were all at 100 percent, with Morgan Malley at 14/15 and Shelby Ebner, 9/11.  In the serve receive (SR) department, Shelby Ebner was the leader at 10/10.  Also at 100 percent were Tayah Barnes (9/9), Paige Bennett (3/3) and Kaitlynn Aug (1/1).  Sara Schultz (12/13) and Taylor Sprenger (6/7) missed just one.

As a team, Fillmore Central hit only .055 (25 kills-19 errors-109 attacks), far below their season average of .168.  Tops in kills was Leah Scheevel (10) and Sammi Bakke (6), with both hitting .200.  Scheevel also had two ace blocks.  Morgan Malley had 20 of the team’s 22 set assists.

The Falcons are now 23-7 for the season.

• Mabel-Canton vs. Fillmore Central…these two teams have six common opponents and both are 5-1 against them.  Both teams have wins over Houston, Lanesboro, Rushford-Peterson, Mayer Lutheran and Cotter, and both teams have lost to New Life Academy.  This should be a very interesting and competitive match, just like last year
