The Fillmore Central Falcons boys basketball team will return seven letter winners from the 2013-14 roster: Jordan Miller, Nick Mensink, Kiel Larson, Bryce Whitehill, Gatlin Woellert, Zach Sorenson and Trace Tollefson.  Mensink (6 ppg), Miller (3 ppg) and Larson (3 ppg) have the most experience, each playing in all, or all but one of last year’s games.  Tollefson is a junior, the other six are seniors.  In addition to the seven returnees, others hoping to get some varsity playing time include senior Alex Scrabeck, juniors Austin Bahler, Blake Bigalk, Matson Kiehne, Tyson Ristau, Nate Birch, Kurtis Hershberger, Alex Lange, Bailey Brunsvold and Marshall Rolfs, and sophomore Drew Tienter.

“Very ‘guard heavy’ on our incoming guys,” said head coach Aaron Mensink.  “We look to be quick and aggressive on both sides of the game (offense and defense).  Pretty decent shooting ability, overall, as a team.  Size is our main concern,” Mensink concluded.

Mensink sees Rushford-Peterson and Caledonia as the teams to beat in the East, and Plainview-Elgin-Millville in the West.  He adds that R-P and Spring Grove are the favorites in the 1A East Sub-section.

Last year the Falcons finished the season with an 11-16 record, 6-14 in the TRC-South.  Fillmore Central ended their season last year with a first round loss to Mabel-Canton in the 1A East Sub-section Tournament.

New look for TRC

This year the Three Rivers Conference added La Crescent and will be divided into two divisions, East and West.  Members of the East Division include La Crescent, Fillmore Central, Caledonia, Rushford-Peterson, Lewiston-Altura and Cotter.  West Division members are Southland, Chatfield, Kingsland, Dover-Eyota, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, St. Charles and Wabasha-Kellogg.  Schools will play their Division teams twice and schools from the other division once.  West teams will have 18 conference games and the East teams will have 17 conference games.  Each division will have a champion, but no playoff game is scheduled between the two winners.

Fillmore Central will open the 2014-15 campaign hosting Cotter Friday night in Preston.
