Janet Fossum of Spring Grove was awarded the Violet Peart Rose Award.
Janet Fossum of Spring Grove enjoys flower and vegetable gardening, canning, baking, sewing and quilting. Her "Peace Tea Rose" in a small blue vase was chosen champion and was also recognized with the Violet Peart Rose Award in the open class flower gardening division at the Houston County Fair.

Shirley and Karen Hart of La Crescent started the award in memory of their aunt, Violet Peart, who died from cancer.

"Aunt Vi got me interested in roses and I wanted to do something to remember her by," Shirley Hart stated. "Each year the floret ribbon has a different color," she noted.

Fossum has been exhibiting in open class the last five years, receiving many top prizes. This year this Norwegian lady's lefse was named reserve champion. Other exhibits and prizes included: cucumbers, quilted table runner - first; zucchini bread, cabin cookies, canned bing cherries, quilt, hen and chicks, potted geranium, black-eyed Susans, and eggplant - second.
