Nine-Man state, section and sub-district champion Spring Grove placed five players on the All-District Football Team, including Back of the Year Alex Folz. Two other players are the All-District Honorable Mention. Zach Hauser was the Coach of the Year.

Folz, Cullen Patterson, Ethan Matzke, Sam Sanness, and Noah Elton are All-District football players while George Boyd and Taylor Holty are All-District Honorable Mention team members.

The Lions are members of the East Sub-District in the 9-Man football South District.

The First Team had 13 seniors, 10 juniors and one sophomore. On offense, there were 8 linemen, 7 running backs, 5 quarterbacks and 4 receivers.

FOLZ, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound junior quarterback/safety and punter/kicker was named all-district for the second-straight season and was also named the 2017 Sub-District Back of the Year.

In eight league games, Folz led the sub-district in three categories: passing touchdowns (19), kick scoring (25 points) and defensive interceptions (4). He returned one of those 4 interceptions 43 yards for a touchdown.

He ranked second in the district in another three categories: quarterback rating (108.2), passing yards (1,261) and punting (34.8-yard average).

Folz was third in both rushing touchdowns (13) and points scored (111). He was seventh in the district in total rushing yards (667).

Defensively, Folz was the third-leading tackler for the Lions (105), which included an impressive 62 solo tackles.

PATTERSON, a 5-9, 160 senior running back/cornerback/kick returner, was named all-district for the second-straight season. In eight sub-district games, Patterson tied for fourth in interceptions with 3, returning one of them 27 yards for a touchdown. He was sixth in rushing (740 yards, 92.5 yards a game) in the sub-district.

In the 14 games played by Spring Grove on its way to the championship, Patterson rushed for 1,321 yards and 17 touchdowns.

He was eighth in sub-district scoring (68 points). He returned one kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. Patterson finished with 76 tackles this season, including 44 solos.

MATZKE, a 6-3, 210 junior wide receiver/defensive end stepped up his game for the Lions this season. After receiving All-District Honorable Mention honors in 2016, he was named to the All-District squad this year.

He finished tied for second in the sub-district with 6 quarterback sacks. For the season, he led the Lions with 10.5 QB sacks. He caught 13 passes in sub-district games, as well as 19 for the season with 4 touchdowns and 5 extra points. On special teams, Matzke blocked a punt and returned it 25 yards for a TD.

SANNESS, a 6-5, 210-pound senior tight end/defensive end made things happen on the field. He led the sub-district with 3 fumble recoveries. Sanness was tied for fourth in quarterback sacks with 5. He was disruptive to opposing offenses, finishing with 95 tackles and a team-best 17 for loss.

When the Lions had the ball, Sanness was tied for second in the sub-district with 5 touchdown catches. He was eighth in receiving yardage with 322. The senior tight end caught 18 passes in district games and 28 on the season.

ELTON, a 5-10, 170-pounder was another versatile Lion, playing as a wide receiver/linebacker/kick returner. He ranked second in the sub-district with 27 pass receptions (51 total) and fourth in receiving yardage with 365 in the district (829 total).

Defensively, Elton tied for fourth with 3 interceptions, taking 1 of them 40 yards for a touchdown. He finished with 90 tackles (8.5 for loss) and 4.5 sacks.

Elton was third in the district with an 11.9-yard average on punt returns and was one of only three players in the district to return a punt for a touchdown (62 yards).

BOYD, a 6-0, 205-pound senior offensive guard and defensive lineman, received Honorable Mention for a second season. He was an anchor on the line of scrimmage.

Boyd disrupted opposing offenses along the line of scrimmage, finishing tied for second in fumble recoveries with 2 during district games, 1 of which was recovered in the end zone for a TD. He also forced 2 fumbles and tallied 92 tackles, 6.5 for loss, including 5 sacks.

HOLTY, an offensive guard and linebacker, was a tackling machine for the Spring Grove defense. The 5-10, 180-pound senior was always around the ball, leading SG in tackles with an amazing 150, of which 52 were solo, 8.5 for loss, including 3 sacks. He forced 2 fumbles, one of which was in the end zone and recovered for a Lion TD.
