The Spring Grove Lion girls basketball team split a pair of games last week, falling in Decorah, Iowa, on Dec. 19, thanks to a cold-shooting second half 41-39. The Lions returned home for a conference win against Mabel-Canton on Dec. 21 with free throws a big key to a six-point win, 48-42. Spring Grove is back to the .500 mark at 4-4 overall (3-2 SEC).

Loss at Decorah, 41-39

Decorah’s 6-foot-1 senior forward Maddy McEnaney was clutch when it counted, grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring the winning basket with 36 seconds to play. After a Spring Grove turnover and a missed Decorah free throw, the Lions weren’t able to get a shot off before time expired.

Iowa Class AAAA Decorah improved to 3-7 with the win over Minnesota Class A Spring Grove. This was the first meeting between the teams since 1999 and only the second game ever between the squads.

Spring Grove started well, scoring the first seven points of the game and leading 28-16 at halftime after shooting a scorching 57% against the Viking man defense in the first half.

However, Decorah switched to a zone defense in the second half, and the Lions only shot 23% after the break. Spring Grove was outscored 25-11 after halftime.

The Vikings opened the second half with a 15-2 run, taking their first lead of the game at 31-30, but two baskets by Amelia Solum put the Lions back on top 34-31 after the third quarter.

The Vikings’ third-and-final 3-pointer put them back in front 39-38 with 2:56 left to play. Spring Grove tied the score with a free throw, but that would be their only point scored in the final 3:23 of the game.

The game-winning rebound and put back came as part of a Decorah 13-6 scoring advantage due to offensive rebounds. The Vikings grabbed twice the number of offensive rebounds as the Lions (16-8), which led to 11 more official shot attempts from the field than Spring Grove generated. While Spring Grove hit 40% of its shots, Decorah shot 33% from everywhere, including 2-point shots, 3-pointers, and free throws.

Lauryn Bohr led the Lions in scoring with 10 points while grabbing 7 rebounds. Solum scored 7 points and pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds. Alyssa Johnson added 8 points.

Allie Hafner scored 13 points for Decorah and McEnaney added 12.

Decorah had a more comfortable 49-28 win in the B-team game.

Win vs. M-C 48-42

The 101st meeting between the two teams boiled down to two things: free throws and a 14-point scoring run. Both of those factors helped the Lions win the game by six points (48-42) and pull ahead in the series, 51 to 50.

The Lions (4-4, 3-2 SEC) led by as many as 7 points in the first half, but the turning point in the game came with Mabel-Canton (2-6, 1-3 SEC) up by 7.

Down at halftime 22-21, the Cougars opened the second half with an 11-3 run to take a 32-25 lead. The Lions quickly ran off 14 straight points to take a 7-point lead (39-32) and went on to win the game by 6 points.

During the game-changing scoring outburst, Spring Grove hit 4 of 4 free throws and 4 of 8 shots from the field, including 2 of the team’s 3 three-pointers, while also forcing 4 Cougar turnovers with a full-court defense.

A Mabel-Canton basket was the only field goal scored in the final 4:32, but Spring Grove held on by hitting 5 of 9 free throws in the final 2:33.

Free throws were the difference on the scoreboard as the Lions nailed 17 of 29 from the foul line, while Mabel-Canton only went 5 of 7. Three Cougars fouled out during the final three minutes of the game.

While SG hit more than 3 times as many free throws, the Lions also finished with 3 times as many offensive rebounds (15 to 5) and outrebounded the Cougars overall 43-30.

Bohr pulled down 15 rebounds while scoring 13 points to complete a double-double. Kaitlyn Gross almost joined her, finishing with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Johnson added another 11 points with Solum scoring 9. Mariah Edgington (4 points) led the Lions in both steals (7) and assists (5).

Payton Danielson led M-C by scoring 14 points.

M-C won the B-team game 41-31 and the seventh-grade game 22-15, but the SG eighth-graders won 29-21.
