Either Spring Grove (13-0) or Nevis (11-1) will take home its first state football championship trophy after their 10 a.m. Prep Bowl clash this Friday, Nov. 24, in Minneapolis at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Tigers earned their shot at the title with a 44-16 state semi-final flogging of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton after knocking out North Woods 42-14 in the quarterfinals.

Nevis did experience a mid-season 20-14 setback against state-ranked Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal in week 6, a loss they avenged in the Section 6 championship game with a 20-18 rematch win against the Titans, who closed at 9-2.

State-ranked No. 1 Spring Grove and No. 6 Nevis have one common opponent. The Tigers defeated No. 8 Stephen-Argyle 42-20 in the regular season finale with the Lions having just dismissed the Storm 27-7 in a state semi-final. That last score might have been more decisive as the Lions took a knee at the Stephen-Argyle 1 yard-line on the final play.

This is the fifth state tourney appearance for Nevis and first since 2012. This is the third state tourney trip for SG, the first since 2011.

Neither the Lions nor the Tigers have ever played in the Prep Bowl with each having reached one previous state semi-final. Nevis fell to Argyle in a 1981 semi-final; Spring Grove lost 19-16 to Hillcrest Lutheran in a 2003 semi-final at the Metrodome. In 2011, the Lion season ended with an 8-7 heartbreaking loss in the state quarterfinals.
