The Spring Grove boys basketball team was humming on all cylinders as they beat Lanesboro on the road Tuesday, Jan. 16, by a score of 82-36 in their only game of the week. It was the 50th consecutive conference victory for Spring Grove, which is now 8-4 this season (3-0 SEC).

The Lions played very well at both ends of the floor. Sam Sanness scored a career-high 24 points while Spring Grove shot a season-best 61% from the field. On defense, the Lions had 21 steals as the winless Burros struggled with 26 turnovers.

Ethan Matzke had a career-high 6 steals as part of an impressive stat line that included 10 points, a game-high 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

After scoring 13 points in the first half of the B-team game, freshman Caden Grinde, in jersey number 13, came off the bench to score 13 points in the varsity game. Adin Solum added 12 points and 6 assists while Alex Folz put in 9 points and passed out another 6 assists.

The Burro offense went through point guard Carson Schwichtenberg, who scored 15 points. The 6-foot junior had his team's only 2 three-pointers, then the Lions limited his long-range attempts.

Schwichtenberg scored the first two points of the game, but Spring Grove then hit six-straight shots and would lead by as many as 31 points on the way to a 48-21 halftime spread.

After the break, the Lions scored on their first seven possessions and would eventually extend the lead to 50 points (81-31). The eventual 46-point winning margin is the greatest in the 63-game series since 1948.

LHS hit half of its two-point shots (11 for 22) but connected on only 2 of 19 three-pointers - 11%, which is a season-low for a Lion opponent.

Spring Grove shot a hot 42% (8 for 19) beyond the arc and a season-best 70% closer in. That accuracy was boosted by 26 fast-break points and getting the ball inside to Sanness, who hit 12 of 13 on the low post. The 6-5 senior was fantastic, scoring 14 of the Lions' first 16 points of the second half.

Spring Grove matched a season-best 24 assists on 34 scoring plays. Five Lions had more assists than turnovers.

The only statistical edge for Lanesboro came with eight fewer fouls and three more free throws (8 for 13, 62%) than Spring Grove (6 for 10, 60%).

The Burros fell to 0-12 (0-4 SEC) two nights before their first win of the season (61-46 versus Glenville-Emmons). It was the ninth straight Lion win in the series that Spring Grove now leads by nine games, 36 to 27 (since 1848). The Burros will come to Spring Grove in the final game of the regular season on Feb. 23.

The Lion B-team (4-3) also won 36-19, but Lanesboro took both the eighth grade game 32-26 and the seventh grade contest 37-20.

The Monday, Jan. 22, road game at Waukon, Iowa, was postponed a week to Jan. 29.

The next three games will take place in three different states, starting with a conference matchup at home on Thursday, Jan. 25, against Mabel-Canton with the Lions looking for a season sweep.

Spring Grove will hit the road on Saturday to the Border Battle at Stevens Point, Wisconsin, for a matchup against Stevens Point Pacelli with tipoff at 11:30 a.m.

After the trip to Waukon on Jan. 29, it’s back on the road to Austin the next night for an SEC matchup at Lyle/Pacelli the only time Spring Grove will see the A’s.
