The No. 17-ranked Spring Grove Lion boys basketball team finally got to play a game on their home floor, and they took full advantage of it, leading by as many as 28 points on the way to a 71-50 Southeast Conference win over Houston on Dec. 19.

With a 51st win in last 52 games in the series, Spring Grove improved to 3-2 (2-0 SEC), while Houston dropped to 1-5 (1-3 SEC).

Alex Folz scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds as the state-ranked Lions won their 33rd-consecutive game against Houston.

Despite sitting out a fourth of the home opener in foul trouble, Ethan Matzke finished with a double-double of 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Adin Solum set career-best marks with 14 points and 9 assists (only 1 turnover). Noah Elton was the fourth Lion in double figures, scoring 10 points to go with a career-high 6 assists (also 1 turnover).

Two players logged big nights for Houston (1-5, 1-3 SEC). Junior James Hungerholt had an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double. Sophomore Alex Van Gundy nailed three 3-pointers while scoring 19 points.

The suspense was out of the game early as Spring Grove raced out to a 19-2 lead before finally abandoning full-court defensive pressure with a 23-point lead. The Lions were comfortably in front 42-23 at halftime and later led by 28 points, but outscored Houston only 29-27 in the second half.

The Lions hit 5 of their 7 three-pointers while dominating the first half while the Hurricanes nailed 5 of their 7 treys while battling back in the second half.

Spring Grove controlled the boards, outrebounding Houston 41 to 24 overall while grabbing 15 offensive rebounds and only allowing 6 offensive boards to the Hurricanes. The Lions led the second-chance scoring at 19-6.

The day after the win, the Spring Grove boys moved up two spots to No. 15 in the state rankings.

The Spring Grove B-team boys (2-1) were dominant as well, winning their game 49-19. The eighth-graders (3-1) won 56-15, and the undefeated seventh-grade (4-0) coasted 41-13.

Schedule

The Lions will play the early games during two holiday double headers at Rushford-Peterson, starting on Thursday, Dec. 28, with a game against Kiawock City (Alaska) at 6 p.m. The next night, they’ll play Mankato Loyola, also tipping off at 6 p.m. The order of those opponents has been reversed from what was originally announced.

The first game of the new year is at home on Thursday, Jan. 4, against Grand Meadow.
