Three members of the Hovden family — a pair of brothers and a cousin — collected checkered flags in the Upper Iowa Speedway racing series last week.

July 2 saw UIS drivers convene in Cresco, Iowa, where the United States Racing Association Iron Man racing series for Stock Cars and B-Mods was held. In addition, UIS Mod Lites, Hobby Stocks and Hornets were on hand for some pre-Independence Day action.

Twenty drivers competed in the open-wheel B-Mods class, including competitors from as far away as Kansas, South Dakota, and Missouri. Dan Hovden of Decorah, Iowa, won the feature, followed by Ben Moudry of Cottage Grove. Third went to Dakota Foster of Gardner, Kansas.

Mitch Hovden of Decorah (Dan's brother) won the Stock Cars feature, starting and finishing in the pole position. Kevin Donlan, also of Decorah, took second while Iowan Dillon Anderson finished third.

There were 24 entrants. Brent Tweten of Chatfield corralled ninth place while Shawn Peter of Mabel managed 14th. Caledonia's Jake Lampert finished 20th, and Pete Solum of Spring Grove 22nd.

In the Hobby Stocks, Chris Hovden (a cousin of Mitch and Dan) of Cresco won another feature. Second went to Joshua Ludeking of Decorah while Brady Link of Waukon took third. Tim Olson of Harmony snagged 12th place while Jeremy Oakes of Spring Grove took 15th.

John Griffin of Caledonia won another trip to victory lane in the 600cc Mod Lites division. Joe Provinzino of Chanhassen finished second with Troy Soiney of Mabel third. Adam Rogich, of the same hometown, took fifth.

Ryan Ayers of Decorah won the four cylinder Hornets feature, edging Steve Lane of Clermont, Iowa. Third went to Mitch Balik of Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Breanna Lee of Mabel took sixth.

Promoter Chuck Ihde reported that not all of the Cresco Iron Man races counted for season points in the UIS series. The leader board now includes: Mod Lites — John Griffin (576), Brian Radloff (447), Adam Rogich (389); Hornets — Ryan Ayers (459), Arthur Schott (453), Breanna Lee (402); Hobby Stocks — Chris Hovden (550), Steve Holthaus (547), Steve Larson (535); B-Mods — Dan Hovden (586), Kyle Anderson (589), Chris Weigert (571); Stocks —Kevin Donlan (525), Mitch Hovden (523),Lynn Panos (520).

Weather permitting, the UIS points series ran in Decorah on July 7 as part of the Winneshiek County Fair.
