Larson Well Drilling, which had finished as regular-season runner-up, closed the summer with the Canton League Tournament championship. Coming out of the losers' bracket, Larson Well had to win four games, taking two out of three against regular-season champion Mabel Liquor.

The four-team, double elimination tourney started with four games on Friday night (Aug. 7) and finished on a steamy Saturday morning.

Mabel Liquor 16,

Soland Carpentry 15

The winners took advantage of two home runs by Toad.

Larson Well 17,

Bunke Construction 16

Larson came from seven runs down in the bottom of the last inning. Paul Tollefsrud delivered the final game-ending hit.

It was a perilous start for the eventual champion. LWD led 7-5 before Bunke continued to score in every inning. Bunke plated four runs in the top of the seventh to lead 16-9.

Three of Mabel Liquor's four home runs came during a nine-run third inning. Larson would never catch up. The winners received home runs from Kyle Folstad, Blaine Coyle, Levi Spalla and Adam Wilder.

Mabel Liquor would be the only team to survive Friday without a loss.

The breakfast-hour losers' bracket rematch was the first tourney game decided by more than three runs. A 10-run third inning put the game out of reach.

For Bunke, Blaine Storlie hit two of his three tourney homers, sandwiched around a round-tripper from uncle Trevor Storlie. But it would not be enough.

Bunke  300  202  0 - 7

Larson Well 12,

Mabel Liquor 2

Coming out of the losers' bracket, Larson would have to defeat undefeated Mabel Liquor twice. Larson never trailed while taking this rematch. This result set up a winner-take-all championship game.

Dave Foley's second home run of the game was a two-RBI, walk-off blast that ended the game an inning early with the 10-run rule. Alex Smith also hit one over the fence for the winners.

Larson's second 10-run inning of the day kick started another runaway win. Saturday's three lopsided results were a departure from the four tight fits on Friday.
