Erwin Ruesink, 103, of Spring Valley, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at the Spring Valley Care Center from natural causes.

He was born to Gerrit and Grace Ruesink in Bristol Township on Sept. 14, 1914.

He attended and graduated from a rural school, Preston High School and Teachers Normal Training.

He married Carmen Kruegel on Aug. 2, 1938.

He and his wife both taught in rural schools for several years before they began farming east of Cherry Grove. While farming, he became manager of Bloomfield Mutual Insurance Company in 1944. He and his wife moved to Spring Valley in 1953.

In addition to managing Bloomfield Mutual Insurance Company, he became president and a director of Spring Valley Mutual Tornado Company and the field representative for the state of Minnesota for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company of Grinnell, Iowa. He also actively served on several committees of the Minnesota Association of Farm Mutual Insurance Companies and became its chairman in 1981.

He was a lifelong member of Greenleafton Reformed Church, teaching Sunday school, chairing several committees and serving in various leadership positions. He was a member of the Spring Valley Kiwanis Club and served as treasurer of the Spring Valley Historical Society.

He is survived by his two sons, Robert (Joyce) of Boise, Idaho, and Arlyn (Vicki Zimmerman) of Roseville; four grandchildren, Michelle (Scott) Beckers of Brooklyn Park, Brant (Tammi) of Nampa, Idaho, Benjamin (Kelly Caldwell) of Maple Grove and Bethany (Pete Winecke) of Maple Grove; six great-grandchildren, Allyson, Tyler and Connor Beckers, A. Kyle and Bradon Ruesink and Nathan Findorff.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Carmen in 1993.

A funeral service for him was held on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Greenleafton Reformed Church in rural Preston with the Rev. Roger Lokker officiating. Burial followed in the Greenleafton Cemetery.
