The 2017-18 girls basketball season is underway. Tuesday, the Chatfield girls were set to open the new season by hosting the Southland Rebels.  Varsity game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Coach Brian Baum started coaching at Chatfield in 1993 (’93-’94 season) and is entering his 25th year as the head coach for the Chatfield girls basketball team.  He has a career record at Chatfield of 340-269, and an overall career record of 355-318.  Baum was head coach at Spring Valley and Kingsland (three years, 1990-1993) prior to his tenure at Chatfield.

Baum returns seven letterwinners and three starters this year.  Those returning letterwinners and significant stats are Macy Pederson (senior, 5’3” guard, 10 points per game), Megan Hopp (senior, 5’4” guard, 3 ppg), Britney Fretland (senior, 5’6” guard, 3 ppg), Belle Berg (junior, 5’10” forward, 4.5 ppg, 4 rebounds per game), Shelby Isensee (junior, 6’ post, 2 ppg, 2 rpg), Alanna Goetzinger (junior, 5’11” post, 2 ppg, 2 rpg) and Silja Erickson (sophomore, 5’10” post, 2 ppg, 2 rpg).  Additional support will come from Grace Friederichs (5’4” senior guard), Sarah Baum (5’8” junior forward) and Kaci Goldsmith (5’8” junior forward).  Last year the team compiled a 4-22 record, 4-14 in the Three Rivers Conference.

“We will be a more competitive team,” said Baum.  “And, we’ll have to cut our turnovers down and defend and rebound better this year, in order to have a chance to win.  We’ll also need to improve our ball handling skills and our passing.”

In the conference Baum sees Caledonia, Dover-Eyota, Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Cotter as the teams to beat.  In the section, Lourdes, Stewartville, Byron, Caledonia and Zumbrota-Mazeppa will be really good, added Coach Baum.

Assistant coaches this year include Kyle Tollefson, Scott Schmaltz and Ryan Kivimagi.

The gals are at Dover-Eyota Friday night.
