A solid defensive effort in their last two games has give the Chatfield girls a two-game winning streak, improving their record in the Three Rivers Conference to 5-8. 

The team is now 6-12 for the season and finished 2-4 against teams in the East Division.

In Friday night’s 53-38 win over Southland, coach Brain Baum was really pleased with the team’s defense.  “It was a very physical game and I was really glad the way the girls held their own,” he said.  “Southland didn’t have any players in double-figures.  Whenever the made a move, we countered,” he added. “Macy Pederson played really well for us.”

Pederson led the team with 19 points, 16 of them coming in the second half.  She was six for six at the free throw line, and all of them coming in the second half, too.  Belle Berg (12) and Britney Fretland (10) were also in double-figures in the game.  All of Fretland’s points were scored in the first half. 

Alanna Goetzinger added eight points to the cause and Shelby Isensee had four.  Both Berg and Goetzinger were two for four at the free throw line.  The team hit 10 of 14 shots at the charity stripe, eight of 10 in the second half, and several of them down the stretch when the Rebels were trying to get back into the game.

Chatfield had five three-pointers in the game, three by Pederson and two for Fretland.  Chatfield led 25-18 at the intermission.

In Tuesday’s win over the Lancers, Berg was the hero in the game.  Trailing 43-42, Berg hit an eight-foot jumper to give the Lady Gophers a 44-43 lead and then hit one of two free throws to seal the win.  Berg finished the game with 13 points, including five of eight at the free throw line, four rebounds, four steals and two assists. 

Pederson led the team in scoring with 14, including three of six from downtown.  She also added three rebounds, three assists and a steal.  Goetzinger also hit double-digits in scoring 10, going five for eight from the field.  She had a team-high nine rebounds, dished out three assists and came up with a pair of steals.  Rounding out the scoring for Chatfield were Grace Friederichs (two), Fretland (two) and Isensee (four).  Adding to the floor game were Friederichs (two rebounds, one steal, one assist), Megan Hopp (two rebounds, one steal, two assists), Fretland (two rebounds, three steals, three assists), Isensee (three rebounds, one steal, one assist) and Kaci Goldsmith (one steal).  Silja Erickson is out right now with a back injury, aka “a hitch in her get-along.” Sarah Baum also played but didn’t score. 

Tuesday night the gals were scheduled to host Dover-Eyota, which has moved into the top spot in the West Division, Thursday night they are at Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Friday night the team is back home against Lake City.  Monday night the team will host state-ranked Stewartville (No. 7, 15-3) and freshman phenom Erin Lamb in a nonconference game.
