The Superbowl of Chronology is played each year at lunchtime as part of the Chatfield High School celebration of Snow Week. This year’s championship round went into overtime between the junior boys team of Seth Allen, Zach Roline, Gage Tuohy, Nathan Goldsmith and Jack Tuohy and the freshmen team of Alex Wright, Seth Goetzinger, Evan Wright, Konnor Kivimagi and Braden Thompson. The freshmen were attempting to become only the second ninth grade team to ever win the tournament.

After nine tense overtime turns, a tournament record, the juniors prevailed. In addition to having their name placed on the much-coveted trophy in Tom Hilgren’s classroom, the juniors will each receive a $5 Subway gift certificate.

Chatfield graduate and current teacher, Tyler Simpson, “threw out the first pitch” (read the first card) in the finals. Simpson was a 2009 Chronology champion.

Approximately 60 students participated in this year’s 16th annual Chronology competition with dozens more watching their classmates compete. The tournament began on Tuesday with the juniors competing against each other for the right to participate in Friday’s championship. Each day saw a different class competing during their lunchtime to gain a seat in the finals.

Chronology is a game in which students try to place historical events in chronological order. As they accumulate more events (cards) it becomes increasingly more difficult to place them in the correct chronological order. All ninth through 12th graders have played the game in the history classes taught by Tom Hilgren and Dave Hinck.
