Another piece of Norway has moved into town with the opening of Calluna, a flower shop and variety store.

The store is located in the former Gift to Gab building. Its name is after one of two national flowers of Norway.

Calluna is the species name of the purple heather plant that is common in Norway. The Calluna is considered the official flower of Norway although many prefer the Saxifraga cotyledon or pyramidal saxifrage, which flowers out in a rosette pattern.

Owners Amy Halverson and Anne Scheetz wanted to choose a name that would relate to the Norwegian heritage of Spring Grove.

“We’ll have women’s clothing, children’s clothing, home decor, gifts, toys, baby gifts and kitchen items,” Scheetz said. “It’s a variety of items.”

They will also sell flowers and create arrangements. A few arrangements will be made daily and kept in the cooler for on-the-spot purchases.

Flower orders can also be made by calling 507-498-5994 or submitting a request through Facebook or stopping by in person. Scheetz added they will have their own website “down the road.”

“We can do same-day service for flowers, like birthday arrangements,” Scheetz said. “For weddings, we’ll need more notice.”

They are also taking suggestions for certain items or brands that people might like to see in the store.

Scheetz and Halverson are aiming for prices to be at a moderate price point, but there will be items in all price ranges, Scheetz said.

“We picked some clothing lines that are made in the U.S., and a skincare line made right here in Minnesota,” she said. “We like to support local vendors. We want our merchandise to be affordable but also of good quality.”

Scheetz and Halverson have known each other since kindergarten and have been friends ever since, Scheetz said. They are both from Caledonia, though Scheetz and her husband moved to Spring Grove two and a half years ago.

The idea for Calluna came from a longtime desire to own and run their own store.

“Amy approached me four months ago and said, ‘I’m thinking of opening a store. What do you think?’” Scheetz recalled.

“My husband and I wanted to run a store, too. This (Gift to Gab) property came up for lease, and we just went for it.”

Their grand opening will be Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Snacks and beverages will be available, in addition to drawings for gift cards and merchandise.

“It’s a fun way for people to stop in and see the new place,” Scheetz said.

As for regular business hours, the store will likely be open Tuesday through Saturday. Specific hours are still be decided, but will probably be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Scheetz said they plan to be open later in the evenings when Music-in-the-Park starts, because they want to accommodate people who finish work later in the evening.
