“The faster we swim, the sooner we win!” is the spirited cry of five sassy Southern women who are “The Dixie Swim Club,” a hilarious and touching comedy being presented by Lanesboro Community Theater.

Written by the Jones, Hope, Wooten team, “The Dixie Swim Club” highlights the decades-long friendship of Sheree, Lexie, Dinah, Jeri Neal and Vernadette, who met on their college swim team and descend on the Outer Banks every August for a long weekend, free of children, husbands, jobs, etc.  The audience is invited to experience four of those weekends.  As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to tackle life’s challenges.  And when fate throws a wrench into one of their lives, these friends prove the enduring power of friendship and rally around their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a surprising and poignant direction.

“What drew me to this comedy,” explains director Diana Dwyer Lawrence, “was how honestly the friendships of women were presented by the playwrights.  These women are fiercely loyal, protective, strong, funny, sometimes a little catty, but always forgiving.  And these women have sustained and nurtured their relationships throughout their lives.  How many of us have been able to do that?  And for those of us who have, how wonderful that gift is!  Of course, that the play is truly hilarious and quite touching just adds to its magic!”

“The Dixie Swim Club” plays at the St. Mane Theater in Lanesboro on Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 21, 22, 28, 29, at 7 p.m. and on Sundays, Feb. 23 and March 1 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are available at Parkway Market, online at thedixieswimclub.brownpapertickets.com, or by calling (800) 838-3006.  A limited number of tickets may be available at the box office on the day of the performance.
