Chatfield’s boys basketball team had a two-win week last week, both wins against teams the Gophers lost to earlier in the season, as the boys head into the final week of the regular season this week.

The team played well on the defensive end of the floor, said head coach Jeff DeBuhr, and the team hit quite a few perimeter shots as well in the wins.

“However, the biggest key to our success has been consistent effort as a team,” he said.  “We are getting contributions from a lot of different players right now and our stretches where we struggle are getting shorter.  We also had a lot of players dealing with sickness this week and we showed some real toughness battling through that.”

The two wins came over Southland, 74-68, and Dover-Eyota, 64-56.  In the first meeting of the year against Southland, the Gophers lost 90-87.  They also lost to D-E earlier in the season, 68-55.

Chatfield had three players in double-figures in the win over the Rebels: Reid Johnson (18), Cole Johnson (13) and David Castleberg (14).  Seven other players scored in the game: Landon Bance (8), Ben Fretland (9), Masyn Remme (2), Drew Schindler (1), Henry Gathje (4), Austin Koenigs (2) and Sam Backer (3).

It also doesn’t hurt a team when the shots are good, too.  The guys hit 24 of 52 (46.2%) from the field, six of 15 (40.0%) from three-point range and 74.1 percent (20/27) at the free throw line.  Individually, Reid Johnson was six for 11 from the field, while Cole Johnson (4/7), Fretland (3/4), Remme (1/1), Castleberg (4/9), Gathje (1/1) and Backer (1/2) also scored.  At the free throw line, Reid Johnson hit four of five, with five for six for Cole Johnson, six for six for Castleberg and two for two for Gathje.  Reid Johnson was two for four from three-point range, with two for five for Bance and two for three for Fretland.

Rebound leaders were Reid Johnson (8), Cole Johnson (6), with four each for Bance, Castleberg and Koenigs.  Cole Johnson (6) and Bance (4) led the team in assists and Reid Johnson had a team-high five steals.

There were also three players in double-digits against the Eagles: Reid Johnson (19), Bance (17) and Fretland (11).  Bance was six for 14 from the field and Fretland was four for eight.  Bance hit four of seven from downtown and Fretland connected on three of seven from beyond the arc.

Castleberg and Gathje contributed five points each, with three for Koenigs and two each for Cole Johnson and Backer.

Reid Johnson nearly had a double-double, with nine rebounds, Bance pulled down six, Fretland had five, Cole Johnson four and three boards each for Castleberg and Gathje.  Cole Johnson (6) and Reid Johnson (3) led the team in assists and Reid Johnson came up with a team-high three steals.

The team hit 10 of 23 shots (43.5%) from three-point range and 14 of 16, 87.5 percent, at the charity stripe.

Monday the team was scheduled to travel to Grand Meadow, weather permitting, and Tuesday the Gophers were to go up to Wabasha-Kellogg. Friday, they wrap-up the 2019-20 regular season with a game at home against St. Charles.
