Last-play touchdown lifts Lions past Pirates

A Chandler Bergrud touchdown pass to Isaac Griffin broke a tie score on the final play of Spring Grove's 7-on-7 (passing only) football victory over De Soto (Wis.). The Lions then outscored Westby (Wis.) 40-30 in the second league game in La Crosse on Sunday.

The varsity basketball boys (3-7, 2-5 league) split a pair of summer league games against Wisconsin competition while the B-team boys (5-2) walloped Lanesboro to remained undefeated (4-0) in league play.

The varsity basketball girls (2-4) could not quite overtake La Crescent and could not keep up with Fillmore Central.

FOOTBALL : SG 33, De Soto 30

SG 40, Westby 30

The Lions completed their final five passes, three for touchdowns to overtake De Soto. The 3-point TD toss on the final play broke a 30-30 tie as Spring Grove avenged a 30-29 loss to the Pirates back in week two of the four-week summer program.

Spring Grove also put away the win versus Westby with three late TD passes.

Overall, Bergrud completed 26 of 45 passes (58%) for nine touchdowns with only one interception. 

The Lion defenders limited the two opponents to a 45 percent completion rate and five touchdowns. The Grove guys came up with three interceptions - two by John Koch and one from Ty Cleven.

Caden Grinde caught 12 passes with five touchdowns. Griffin scored twice with five total receptions. Koch had four catches, two for TDs. Reid Bjerke had three receptions and Carson Gavin two.

Spring Grove improved to 4-6, including a 3-3 league record.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Varsity: Prairie du Chien 38, SG 31

Spring Grove led almost all the first half and had extended a 15-12 halftime lead into its greatest margin at 25-17 before Prairie du Chien scored 17 unanswered points. While doubling their previous point total, the Blackhawks thus turned an eight-point deficit into a nine -point lead (34-25) on the way to a seven-point win.

Caden Grinde scored 17 of the Lions' 31 points.

Prairie du Chien is in Division 3 of Wisconsin's five-division alignment.

Varsity boys: SG 35, Brookwood 13

The Lions outscored the Falcons 15-5 in the first half and 20-8 after halftime. Grinde tossed in 16 points, Wyatt Murphy 7, Carson Gerard 4, John Koch 3, Alan Michels 3 and Caleb Griffin 2.

Brookwood is the public school district that encompasses three Wisconsin towns - Norwalk, Ontario and Wilton.

B-team boys: SG 50, Lanesboro 17

The B-team improved to 5-2 (4-0 league) with the 33-point rout. It was 27-3 at halftime. Carson Gerard led with 15 points while Jacob Olerud added 14 and Ty Cleven 9.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: La Crescent 32, SG 29

After five lead changes, the Lancers held the greatest lead of the game at 31-25 with under two minutes remaining. Amelia Solum scored four of her 21 points to get Spring Grove back within two (31-29) with 55 seconds left,

The Lions forced a turnover at 0:40 but missed a 3-point attempt at 0:25.

The Grove girls had to foul several times to force a La Crescent free throw. The Lancers hit 1 of 2 foul shots with two seconds remaining.

It had been a cold-shooting first half for both teams with La Crescent ahead 8-7 at halftime.

Fillmore Central 45, SG 24

A quality crew of Falcons with a tough quarter-court zone defense was in control at halftime 30-12 before outscoring the Lions 15-12 in the second half. Solum led Spring Grove scoring with 13 points.
