Spring Valley men top primary for District 3 county commissioner

Larry E. Hindt and Kevin Beck will face off in the special general election Tuesday, Aug. 13, for the Fillmore County commissioner seat in District 3.

The two received the most votes in the three-person special primary election Tuesday, May 14, that had light voting. Hindt received 93 votes and Beck received 92 votes. The third candidate, Jordan Fontenello, received 27 votes.

The two Spring Valley residents are seeking to fill the vacant seat held by Gary Peterson, who resigned Jan. 17 in the middle of his term. The winning candidate would serve the remainder of Peterson’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2020. State statute requires a special election to fill a vacancy if there is more than a year left in the term.

Beck came to Spring Valley 23 years ago when he entered law enforcement, starting in Spring Valley, then serving as emergency management director, assistant jail administrator and chief deputy in Fillmore County. He has been a member of the Spring Valley Fire Department for 20 years.

Hindt, who grew up outside of LeRoy, is employed at Olmsted Medical Center in Spring Valley as the branch clinic radiology coordinator, operates a lawn care and snow removal business and assists his son with a family farm. He has lived in Fillmore County 43 years.

District 3 covers the cities of Spring Valley and Ostrander as well as the townships of Beaver, Bloomfield, Forestville and York.

A candidate forum is planned for the morning of Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Spring Valley Community Center.
