Residents and visitors to the city of Lanesboro know something that the rest of the U.S. is increasingly catching on to: the natural beauty and ageless architecture make for a spot of beauty.

Forbes magazine is the latest to bestow its praise on Lanesboro, naming the city to its list of "American's Prettiest Towns."

On its website, the magazine states, "To determine America's most pretty towns, we asked for picks from several experts, including Salt Lake City-based architectural photographer Alan Blakely; residential designer Erin Anderson; painter John Vander Stelt; Bob Krist, photographer and host of PBS' Restoration Stories; Sarah Tuff Dunn and Greg Melville, coauthors of 101 Best Outdoor Towns; Danno Glanz, a designer at urban planning firm Calthorpe Associates; and Greg Ward, coauthor of The Rough Guide USA."

The slideshow on the website showed a picture of shops located along Parkway in downtown Lanesboro. Then it shared, 'Understated and self-assured, this Southeast Minnesota burg is a busy stop along the 60-mile-long Root River bike trail,' says painter John Vander Stelt. 'The limestone bluffs, unpretentious shops and river bottoms offer visual delights.'"

Lanesboro is in good company on the list. The rest of the towns include Cambria, Calif.; Burlington, Vt.; Union, Wash.; Dillon, Mont.; Spring City, Utah; Crescent City, Calif.; Deadwood, S.D.; Rockport, Maine; Guttenberg, Iowa; Cape May, N.J.; Lake Placid, N.Y.; Sedona, Ariz.; Portsmouth, N.H.; Marfa, Texas; Savannah, Ga.; Aspen, Colo.; Santa Fe, N.M.; Monterey, Calif.

Lanesboro also last year was recognized by Mother Earth News on the "Great Places You've (Maybe) Never Heard Of" list honoring the city's cultural and natural attractions.
