'Closed Sessions' see the light of day
Two more closed sessions were held during the Aug. 24 meeting of the Houston County Board of Commissioners, followed by open sessions on the three individuals involved.

The events that resulted in Tuesday's action by the board began last year when Personnel Director Tess Kruger forwarded a complaint that county employees were violating state statute 609.456.

End-of-day dismissals to change at school
Interim Superintendent Rachel Udstuen reported at the Aug. 23 Spring Grove School District Board meeting that there will be a change in the end-of-the-day dismissal procedure.

Uniforms get 'tune-up'
A three-day band camp was held this past week at Spring Grove High School. All band students in seventh through 12th grade attended the "camp" to have their uniforms fit for the upcoming marching and concert season.

Specialty meat producer approved for EDA loan
On Aug. 24 the Spring Grove EDA approved a loan to help bring a new business to town. Commissioners voted to provide $38,000 for Grass Run Farms to build walk-in freezers at the former Sani Brush building at 111 S. Division Ave.

County Commissioners vote to support area libraries
Representatives from all five Southeastern Libraries Cooperating (SELCO) branch libraries in Houston County, along with SELCO Executive Director Ann Hutton, asked county board members for a new contract on Aug. 24.

Winona law firm to take over county cases
Houston County's court appointed legal counsel work will be performed by a Winona Law firm next year.

Court Administrator Darlene Larson told the county board on Tuesday, Aug. 17, that only two firms had submitted request for proposals (RFP) for next year's contract and that Pflughoeft, Pederson, Johnsrun and Knuesel LLC of Winona submitted the low bid of $52,500.

City council prepares for SWIM Center replacements
At their Aug. 17 meeting, Spring Grove City Council members unanimously agreed to transfer $30,000 from the General Fund to the SWIM Center's accumulated depreciation fund.

After expenses in 2009, the SWIM Center came in under budget at $30,000. This money will now be set aside in an account for future repairs and replacements. In an emergency these funds would be available for other city business.

Bear Creek Watershed receives Recovery Act funds
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds have put new life in some local flood control projects. The Bear Creek Watershed Board will receive a total of $755,000 in stimulus funds, which will be used to build six new flood control structures, according to Natural Resources Conservation Service District Conservationist (Caledonia) Gary Larson.
