Baseball team starts 2-1; five games this week

After a season-opening loss to undefeated Caledonia, 15-4, the GMLOK baseball team struck back with a pair of one-run wins over St. Charles 4-3 and 6-5.

This week the team has games scheduled on Monday (at Glenville-Emmons), Tuesday (double-header with Chatfield), Thursday (Lewiston-Altura) and Friday (at Fillmore Central/Lanesboro). 

In the loss to Caledonia, Ethan Fenske, Nick Ramaker (two) and Zach Myhre (two) had hits for the Bulldogs.  It was also reported that Fenske had a double and scored two runs, Ramaker also had a double and two runs-batted-in, and Myhre scored a run. 

On the mound, Zach Bubany pitched five innings, giving up 11 hits, 12 runs (seven earned) while walking four and striking out two.  Dylan Lunning had one inning of work.  He gave up four hits, three runs, all earned, with no walks and no strikeouts.

Caledonia 6-1-0-3-2-3 = 15-15-0

GMLOK 1-0-2-1-0-0 = 4-8-5

Double-headers for the Three Rivers Conference will now be two five-inning games.  In game one against the Saints, GMLOK scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the win. 

Bubany and Myhre each went two for three in the game.  Both of Myhre’s hits were for extra bases, a double and a triple.  Grant Skifter was the pitcher of record, scattering six hits while allowing three runs, all earned.  He walked two batters and struck out two in the win.

In the second game of the double-header, GMLOK scored two runs in the second inning and four more in the third inning, then hung on for the one-run win.  St. Charles made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs. 

Bubany was two for three again in this game.  His two hits were a double and a home run.  He also had two runs-batted-in.  Nolan Skifter went three for three in the game and scored two runs and Ramaker went two for three, also with a double and a homerun.  Fenske went four innings on the mound, giving up two hits, two runs (both earned) and one walk.  He struck out two.  Myhre pitched the last inning, allowing three runs, all earned, two hits and one walk.  He struck out one.
