Bernice Richter, 96, mother of Spring Valley man

Bernice Richter, 96, of St. Charles, died on Monday, Jan. 14, 2019, in Rochester.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1922, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Weigel) Patterson in St. Charles.

She was a graduate of St. Charles High School.

After graduation, she was employed as a secretary in St. Charles at Rollingstone Mutual Insurance Company and then at the Traffic Bureau in Winona.

She was united in marriage to Howard E. Richter of Dover, Aug. 30, 1944.

They farmed northwest of Dover for 30 years, retiring in 1975 to St. Charles. She moved to Rochester in 2011.

She was a 60-plus-years member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 98 in St. Charles and a member of the United Methodist Church. She was a 4-H leader and a Cub Scout den mother.

Her greatest joy was being a devoted wife and mother, loving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She found enjoyment playing cards, flower gardening and sewing.

She is survived by three sons, Allen H. (Lois) of Lincoln, Neb., Lyman R. (Julaine) of Spring Valley and Brian E. of Bloomington; a daughter-in-law, Janet Richter of Rochester; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; a son, Glen H.; a sister, Beatrice Papenfus and brother-in-law, Elmer Papenfus.

The funeral for her was held on Thursday, Jan. 17, at Hoff Funeral Home in St. Charles with the Rev. Heather Klason, United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles.

It is suggested in lieu of flowers, memorials be addressed to St. Charles United Methodist Church, St. Charles Senior Center and Hillside Cemetery Association in St. Charles.
