Bernice Elner Root, 92, of rural Spring Valley, died on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.

She was born on June 5, 1926, in Forestville Township to Harold and Gladys (Vrieze) Lentz.

She was a graduate of Spring Valley High School.

On Sept. 22, 1943, she was united in marriage to Doane at Evangelical Church Parsonage.

She watched her husband play fast-pitch softball for many years. She was a hardworking farmwife and homemaker. In her free time, she enjoyed word-find puzzles, fishing, crocheting and taking care of her big garden. She also loved mowing lawn and always had a pot of coffee ready. She made sure to keep up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

She is survived by her children, John (Margaret) Root of Lewiston, Bob (Mary Ann) Root of Spring Valley, Steve (Cheryl) Root of Byron and Bryan (Michelle) Root of Wykoff; daughter-in-law, Christine Root of Harmony; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Arlone Crowson of Hastings.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doane; son, Harry Root; granddaughter, Amy Root; two brothers and three sisters.

The funeral service for her was held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Cherry Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Deanna Woodward and the Rev. Mark Rader officiating.

Hindt Funeral Home of Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
