Betty James, 96, once of Mabel

Betty H. James, 96, of Houston, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, at Valley View Healthcare and Rehab in Houston.

She was born on Oct. 23, 1922, in Hesper, Iowa, to Harry and Clara (Sanden) Welper. She grew up in the Hesper and Mabel area and graduated from Mabel High School in 1941. 

She married C. Belmont Humphrey on Feb. 9, 1942, in Port Townsend, Wash.  He died on Sept. 11, 1966. 

She then married Vernon James in October of 1968.  He died on Jan. 17, 1996.

She was baptized and confirmed at Hesper Lutheran Church.  She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and the WELCA.  She was a charter member of the Mabel VFW Ladies Auxiliary and also a member of The Sons of Norway, La Crosse Chapter.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Gustavson (Gary West) of Rochester; three grandchildren, Scott (Kelly) Gustavson of Maple Lake, Betsy Frye of Eagle Lake, and Kraig Gustavson of Rochester; nine great-grandchildren, Joshua, Courtney, Connor, Matthew, Kristen, Macy, Travis, Ashley and Caden; and two great-great-grandchildren, Taylor and Issac.

Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, with the Rev. Linda McPeak officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.
