Betty Maxine Thompson, 91, of Spring Valley, died on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, at Ostrander Care and Rehab in Ostrander.

Betty Thompson was born in Spring Valley on Dec. 31, 1927, to Herman and Laura (Berg) Kohn.

On Oct. 27, 1946, she was married to Rals Parker Bumgarner, who died in an auto accident on July 14, 1955. Together, the couple had two children.

She was later married to George Thompson on March 21, 1959, in Spring Valley, and to this union, two more children were born.

She worked at the Friendly Inn in Spring Valley and was later employed at the Spring Valley nursing home, where she cleaned and provided laundry service.

She enjoyed playing bingo, listening to country music, gardening, cooking and quilting. Her favorite hobby, however, was crocheting. She was known for never forgetting a birthday or anniversary. She was also considered to be the best babysitter. In addition to her several hobbies, she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children, Steve Thompson of Spring Valley, Renita Mentes of Kasson and Cheryl (Cory) Boettcher of Owatonna; siblings, Lois Holets of Rochester, Laurence (EllaRita) Kohn of Hollendale, Minn., Kenneth (Suzy) Kohn of Spring Valley, Linda (Leland) Rentschler of Spring Valley and Janice (Bruce) Furman of Glencoe; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rals Parker Bumgarner; her second husband, George Thompson in 2000; a son, Gary (Lois) Bumgarner; a grandson, Gary Bumgarner Jr.; and a brother, Wendall Kohn.

Funeral services for her were held on Monday, Jan. 7, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Mark Van House and the Rev. Betsy Dartt officiating. Burial followed in the Spring Valley Cemetery.
