Bill seeks to develop test for chronic wasting disease

In an effort to battle chronic wasting that has devastated the deer population in southeastern Minnesota, State Rep. Greg Davids, R-Preston, is sponsoring legislation that would develop a diagnostic test for the disease.

“Fillmore and Houston counties represent the epicenter of chronic wasting disease in this state, so this is a critical need for our district,” Davids said.

Davids said officials with the University of Minnesota told him about a new test they’re developing that could be used on live deer that could help with identification purposes. The current testing methods take at least two weeks, while the new process could be done in an hour or two.

Davids has responded by championing a bill that would appropriate roughly $1.8 million to the university to develop a diagnostic test for chronic wasting disease that uses samples from living deer. The new test, which would likely take a couple years for a working prototype, could be used in the field, using urine, saliva or deer droppings to more precisely pinpoint locations of infected deer.

“If we can develop this process and better determine where the problems are, it would be extremely beneficial,” Davids said.

'zombie' deer. oh please! the sad part is, with this type of description, it's terribly misleading, because a perfectly healthy looking subclinical cwd tse prion deer is just as dangerous as one that is clinical.

''Free Ranging Deer, Dr. Deyoung looked at Genetics of this free ranging deer and what he found was, that the genetics on this deer were more similar to captive deer, than the free ranging population, but he did not see a significant connection to any one captive facility that he analyzed, so we believe, Ahhhhhh, this animal had some captive ahhh, whatnot.''

the other part, these tissues and things in the body then shed or secrete prions which then are the route to other animals into the environment, so in particular, the things, the secretions that are infectious are salvia, feces, blood and urine. so pretty much anything that comes out of a deer is going to be infectious and potential for transmitting disease.
