The Spring Grove Athletes of the Year both graduate with their names in the school record books. Senior Lauryn Bohr was chosen Female Athlete of the Year while another senior, Sam Sanness, is the Male Athlete of the Year. Bohr finishes high school with a record that no one else has ever had, while Sanness was a four-sport standout and state champion in his final season at Spring Grove.

The 5-9 senior sits on top of the girls’ record books. She broke the Spring Grove girls all-time school records in volleyball kills and basketball rebounds. Bohr stands out by herself as the only Lion to ever record 1,000 volleyball kills and 1,000 points in basketball.

Her list of awards is a long one. Bohr was the Conference Player of the Year in volleyball. She was All-SEC volleyball for the third year as well as All-SEC basketball for a third season.

Bohr won the Spring Grove Impact Player of the Year (top award) in volleyball for a second time. The senior earned four letters in both volleyball and basketball.

In volleyball, Bohr was the middle hitter and team captain for the Lion girls. This year she led the team in kills (368) while finishing second in blocks (29).

The 5-9 senior was on the block as the center on the Lion basketball team. This year, she led the team in scoring (11.0 ppg), rebounding (7.8 rpg) and shooting percentage (43.9%).

Bohr graduates as the only girl in SG history to have more than 1,000 career points and 700 rebounds. Her final Spring Grove girls career rankings are impressive - first in rebounding with 765 boards, fourth in scoring with 1,140 career points, fourth in made free throws (236) and 10th-place tie in blocked shots (58).

Bohr is heading to the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse to pursue a degree in finance or marketing.

The 6-foot-5 senior was a four-sport athlete at Spring Grove High School, participating in football, basketball, baseball and trap. Sanness was a key All-State contributor to two state championship teams - in 9-man football and the Class 2A clay target team.

His awards list is also quite impressive. Sanness was named All-State, All-Area and All-District in football. Sanness was All-State in trap and All-Conference basketball.

His Spring Grove awards include Defensive Player of the Year in football and the Most Improved Player in both basketball and baseball.

In football, the big four-year letter winner played tight end and defensive end. He led the Lions in both fumble recoveries with four (one for a TD) and in tackles for loss with 17.

Sanness was second in sacks with 7.5; the second-leading receiver in catches (28), yardage (507) and touchdowns (6) and the third-leading tackler with 95 (40 solo). He was part of the offensive line on a team that averaged 44.7 points per game.

While he played only one year of basketball in high school, he was the only center named to the all-conference team. He was very effective under the basket, hitting 67% of his shots from the field, breaking both the Spring Grove boys single-season and career records.

The senior also led the 2018 Lions in blocked shots with 19 and finished second on the team in both scoring (12.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg).

He played first base this spring for the baseball Lions, winding up second on the team in both RBIs (11) and slugging percentage (.500). Sanness was third in batting average (.342), on-base percentage (.444) and extra-base hits (5).

As a trap shooter, he was a top 100 scorer in the state (All-State) during the spring regular season. Sanness had the third-highest average in the conference (23.60 out of 25). He finished 32nd among 115 shooters at the MSHSL state individual competition.

Sanness is set to attend Upper Iowa University and pursue a degree in conservation management.

The athletic department also recognizes graduating seniors who have lettered at least six times during their Lion careers.

Adin Solum topped the list with nine varsity letters - 3 football, 3 basketball, 3 baseball.

Joining Bohr with eight letters was

Cullen Patterson - 4 football, 3 track, 1 basketball.

Sanness earned seven varsity letters (not including trap) - 4 football, 1 basketball, 1 baseball, 1 track.

The outstanding athlete award was first split between boys and girls in 1974. Beginning in 1992-1993, the award was limited to seniors. Since 2003, underclassmen have also been eligible.
