Boys coast past G-E in opener, 69-35

The Spring Grove boys scored on 11 of 13 possessions during a stretch in the first half while blowing away the overmatched visitors from Glenville-Emmons 69-35. It was the season opener for the Lions and the third game for the Wolverines (0-3, 0-2 SEC).

Ethan Matzke had a 15-point, 12-rebound double double along with 5 steals while Alex Folz had team highs with 18 points and 9 assists (only 2 turnovers.)

Off the bench, sophomore Caden Grinde scored to match his jersey number with 13 points, and junior Kyle Hagen came in with an energetic 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Senior Kai Bjerke went 2 for 2 from both the field and the free throw line while also passing around 4 assists with no turnovers.

It was a rough road assignment for a winless and young G-E squad with only one senior in uniform and three sophomore starters.

The Lions' 61st straight SEC win was also their 13th consecutive victory in this series they now lead 29-4.

Wolverine fate was mostly in the hands of 5-foot-8 honorable mention all-conference junior point guard Dawson Dahlum, who scored 21 of the visitors' 35 points while attempting to initiate an attack against a swarming and relentless Lion defense. Dahlum got free long enough to nail 5 three-point baskets and hit 6 of 7 free throws.

The early 27-0 Spring Grove run came while the Lion defense was forcing nine consecutive G-E turnovers. It was 36-10 when the Lions dropped back out of full-court pressure.

It was 54-19 at halftime; G-E committed 18 turnovers before intermission. The Wolverines finished with 28 turnovers and attempted only 28 shots from the field.

The Lions' 21 steals helped them outscore G-E 27 to 2 with fast breaks.

Spring Grove greatly controlled the glass with 39 rebounds to only 11 for G-E, the fewest boards for a Lion opponent in 12 years.

The B-teamgame was a mismatch as well with the Lions ahead 34-7 at halftime before winning 47-10.
