Careful analysis needed for large scale operations

Despite our best efforts, we all know that mistakes and accidents still happen. On Tuesday, June 19, thousands of gallons of liquid manure spilled into Walnut Creek in northeast Iowa when an application hose came apart. The farmer went to great lengths to clean up the spill and for that he should be thanked.

However, when millions of gallons of manure will be pumped through hoses that stretch up to seven miles across creeks, roads and private property, careful analysis of the significant impacts a spill would have seems necessary.

Isn't that only fair? Hundreds of Fillmore and Houston county residents have already asked the MPCA to require Catalpa, LLC, to complete a full environmental impact statement before proceeding. Please email your comments to charles.peterson@state.mn.us and mark.p.gernes@state.mn.us. Deadline is July 3 at 4:30 p.m.
