Evelyn Valdez, 93, graduate of SGHS

Evelyn Juliet Valdez, age 93, of Lake Villa, Illinois, passed away peacefully May 6, 2019, at home. 

She was born July 11, 1925, at home in Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Reinhard and Alvina (Auna) Lane. 

She was baptized and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church by Pastor T.O. Tolo. 

Evelyn attended rural school at the Kjome School located in Highland Township of Winneshiek County, Iowa, and she was a 1943 graduate of Spring Grove High School. 

Evelyn moved to Waukegan, Illinois, following her graduation from Spring Grove High School. She began working for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1945 and retired in 1987, after 42 years of dedicated service as the Chief Rate Clerk. 

On Sept. 14, 1961, Evelyn married Arnold E. Paananen. He died on February 8, 1971. She later married Guadalupe (Joe) Valdez on September 12, 1987. Joe died on May 11, 2004. 

She was a longtime member of Trinity United Lutheran Church in Waukegan, Illinois. 

Evelyn lived with her daughter’s family in Lake Villa, Illinois, for the last 18 years. 

She treasured time with family and the loving bond she shared with her grandchildren. 

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Becky (Mark) Ingrum of Lake Villa, Illinois; three grandchildren, Nathan (Autumn) Ingrum of Waukegan, Illinois, Nicholas (Cristina) Ingrum of Norridge, Illinois, and Natalie Ingrum of Lake Villa, Illinois; and three great grandchildren, Jack Ingrum, Alena Burkhead, and Malia Burkhead. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Melbostad of Spring Grove, Minnesota, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their extended families. 

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Reinhard and Alvina Lane; her husbands, Arnold Paananen and Joe Valdez; her brothers, Leonard Palmer Lane and Ralph Alvin Lane; sisters, Bernice Margaret Myhre and Lila Ann Mahr; sister-in-law, Thelma O. Lane; brothers-in-law Raymond Mahr, Knut Myhre, Alvin Myhre, and Jerome Melbostad. 

A memorial service and burial of cremains will be at a later date at Highland Lutheran Cemetery.
