Film festival at Four Daughters Friday

Four Daughters Vineyard and Winery and Triumph Pictures are collaborating on a film festival to be held in Spring Valley on Friday, April 12, beginning at 7 p.m.

The original event was Oscar weekend in February, but had to be moved due to the winter storm that hit the area. Six of the eight the films featured were in this year’s top 100 academy-qualified list. One of the films, “Period. End of Sentence,” won an Oscar this year.

Cy Dodson, director and curator of the event, owns Triumph Pictures, a Minnesota-based production company with deep roots in storytelling. He is also the creator of this year’s academy-qualified documentary “Beneath the Ink.”

“I had the honor of screening alongside so many great films and filmmakers in 2018,” he said. “I am excited to bring these great works of the short film genre to Four Daughters Winery and Vineyard.”

“Period. End of Sentence” by first time Director Rayka Zehtabch took home the Academy Award in the Short Documentary Category for the 2019 Oscars. It is a vibrant film that takes place in India and delivers a poignant story.

Four Daughters has long been a supporter of independent films and artists and is known for contributions at the Sundance Film Festival. Both Four Daughters wine and hard cider, Loon Juice, have been served at movie premieres in Park City, Utah, during the annual film festival, but its crowning achievement took place when the Sundance Institute asked Four Daughters to be the official provider to the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. Its wine and cider were served at all official Sundance events.

Movies on Friday will be shown on a large-scale projection screen at Four Daughters Vineyard and Winery in the event space, the Barrel room, which is lined with more than 100 barrels of fermenting wine. Tickets are $10, which includes a glass of wine, sangria or hard cider. The festival will feature eight films, shown in two blocks of short documentary films, with a question and answer intermission midway through, held by attending filmmakers and local independent film leaders.

The list of films include:

“Period. End of Sentence,” a documentary directed by Rayka Zehtabchi (academy-nominated).

“My Paintbrush Bites,” a documentary directed by Joel Pincosy.

“Saul's 108th Story,” a documentary directed by Josh Carlon.

“Prince's Tale,” a documentary directed by Jamie Miller (academy-qualified).

“Lotte That Silhouette Girl,” animation directed by Carla Patullo (academy-qualified).

“The Driver is Red,” animation directed by Randall Christopher (academy-qualified).

“Mammoth,” narrative directed by Ariel Heller (student academy award).

“Beneath the Ink,” a documentary directed by Cy Dodson (academy-qualified).

“We are looking forward to continuing our supportive role within the independent film community by sharing the stories of filmmakers across the country,” said Kristin Osborne of Four Daughters. “We feel lucky to have such an amazing film company within Minnesota to work with and we hope to work together to continue bringing great entertainment options into Minnesota.”
