The Chatfield football team improved to 2-0 last Friday with a shutout win over Dover-Eyota.

After a scoreless first quarter, Chatfield got on the scoreboard in the second quarter (3:03) with an 18-yard TD from freshman Sam Backer.  Backer also ran in the two-point conversion attempt, giving the Gophers an 8-0 lead at intermission.

Midway through the third quarter (7:57), it was Backer again, as he romped 42 yards for another score.  The extra point was no good, but the Gophers maintained their defensive prowess, and a shutout at 14-0.

There was more scoring for the Chatfield Gophers in the third quarter as quarterback Reid Johnson connected with Tate Karver on a seven-yard touchdown pass, just 51 seconds after touchdown No. 2.  Johnson hit Masyn Remme for the two-point conversion and Chatfield improved the lead to 22-0.

Just into the fourth quarter, 11:42, Backer cruised to an 85-yard touchdown, his third of the game, and the Gophers went up 28-0.  The Johnson-Remme connection was successful for a second time, converting the two-point conversion.

The Gophers finished off their scoring at 30-0 for their second win of the season.

Backer finished the game with 169 rushing yards, on 13 carries, and three touchdowns. “Sam Backer is for real,” noted Chatfield stat-man Dave Dudek.

Also getting into the running game were Ben Roline, seven carries for 41 yards, Grady Schott, seven carries for 17 yards, Tate Karver (4 carries/5 yards), Campbell Berge (3c/7y), Reid Johnson (1c/3y), Ben Fretland (2c/0y) and Cody Guenther (1c/-1y).

In the passing department, Reid Johnson competed seven of 12 for 152 yards and one touchdown.  On the receiving end of Johnson’s passes were Chance Backer with two catches for 11 yards, Tate Karver, two for 42 yards and one score, and Max Aug, two catches for 95 yards.

Aug did the punting for the Gophers, averaging 33.3 yards per kick on three kicks.  Aug also had one kickoff for 27 yards.  AJ Karver had two kickoffs, averaging 40.5 yards/kick.  Tate Karver had two punt returns for a total of 24 yards, 12.0/return.

No defensive stats were available for this game, but Dudek (stats) reported that Brady Williams, D-E’s quarterback, threw two interceptions, so somebody on the Chatfield defense came up with two INTs and the Eagles had three turnovers, as a team, so somebody on Chatfield’s defense also had a fumble recovery.
