Amelia Solum poured in 27 points and Jacine Johanningmeier had a 12-point, 12-rebound double double as the Spring Grove girls prevailed over Schaeffer Academy for the second time this season, 56-47.

Steady ball-handling, taking the ball inside and excellent free throw shooting propelled the girls to their second straight road road win of the season and 19th victory in 20 games against Schaeffer Academy.

This Jan. 30 rematch at Rochester completed a season sweep for Spring Grove after a 45-39 home win in mid-December.

Both teams came into that first meeting at 0-7, and they both had similar records for the rematch. The Grove girls left Rochester at 5-15, and the big city Lions slipped to 5-16. They ended last week tied for fourth and fifth places in the SEC East with identical 3-8 conference records.

It was a matter of Spring Grove drives and post passes versus Schaeffer 3-point baskets. With Schaeffer most often unable to stop Solum from dribbling inside, Grove outscored the home team 39 to 6 in the lane. Johanningmeier scored four times with post passes and twice with offensive rebounds.

Both teams shot well from 3-point range (SG 33%, SA 30%). While Spring Grove worked the ball inside, Schaeffer launched 33 trey attempts to only 21 shots closer in.

Schaeffer's 10 made triples matched a season-most for Grove opponents (Houston also hit 10) and kept the home team in the game.

Overall, the Grove girls outshot the other Lions 36% to 32% from the field and made better use of the free throws. SG hit 12 of 15 foul shots (80%) to Schaeffer's 5 of 11 (45%). That 80% is a season best when attempting more than six free throws.

SG had only 10 turnovers, but Schaeffer lost possession only 14 times. Each team had 12 offensive rebounds with a last-minute Solum rebound giving Grove a 32-31 edge overall.

In addition to Johanningmeier's dozen boards, Solum finished with 7 rebounds and Katelyn Kraus 6.

In addition to Solum and Johanningmeier double-digit scoring, Maggie Lile put in 6 points, Marie Petersen 5, Emerson Ingvalson 4 and Kraus 2. Usual starter Jordian Leahy was unavailable with injury.

Elizabeth Carter led Schaeffer with 13 points.

Spring Grove jumped out to an early 12-4 lead, but Schaeffer scored the next eight points (12-12), and there would be two lead changes before Grove took a 25-21 lead into halftime.

Spring Grove appeared to be in control after scoring the first eight points of the second half to lead 33-21. But a later 9-point Schaeffer spurt got the home team back within a point at 41-40.

However, Spring Grove promptly replied to that challenge with a 7-point run and a 48-40 lead with 4:27 to play. Spring Grove won the second half by five points after taking the first half by four.

Schaeffer again won the B-teamgame 33-9, while Spring Grove took the eighth grade game 16-8. Schaffer does not have a separate seventh grade team.
