Glenn Merlin Thompson, 84, of Mankato, died on Monday, Feb. 4, 2019.

He was born in LeRoy on May 26, 1934.

He graduated from Spring Valley High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Minnesota. He also achieved a Master of Science degree in finance at the School of Banking, University of Wisconsin.

He served with the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, stationed in Germany and achieved the rank of platoon sergeant.

His career in finance spanned 25 years in banking. He worked for First Bank Systems in Minneapolis, Mankato and Waseca and he served as president and chairman of the board of First State Bank of Waseca. He lastly served as president of Security State Bank in Mankato. He retired as director of operations at Happy Chef Systems in Mankato. He was active in civic affairs in the communities of Mankato and Waseca.

He had a lifelong passion for hunting, fishing and traveling the world in retirement with his wife, Barb. He was also a very talented artist and painted with oil, watercolors and sketching in pen and ink. Relatives and friends enjoyed receiving gifts of his woodcarving talents. He carved birds, fish and six-foot authentic totem poles.

He is survived by his wife, Barb; children, Peter (Mary), Kirby (Bonnie), Randy (Kelly) and Becky (Chris); nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many friends and relatives.

A memorial gathering was held at Charlie’s restaurant in Mankato on Sunday, Feb. 10.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
