The Chatfield boys basketball team is now 1-10 for the season after losing two games this past week to Pine Island (68-60) and Lewiston-Altura (70-54).  The guys are 0-6 in Three Rivers Conference play, and 0-3 against teams from the East division.

“We played a tight game at Pine Island,” said coach Jeff DeBuhr. “We led late in the game, but we just haven’t learned how to win yet.”

The team had four players in double-figures against PI, and shot nearly 40 percent from the field (23/58) and only showed 11 turnovers on the stat sheet.  The four in double-figures were Reid Johnson (17), Cole Johnson (15), Landon Bance (10) and David Castleberg (11).  Chance Backer (3), Ben Fretland (2) and Sam Backer (2) rounded out the Gopher scoring.

The team hit five of 19 from three-point range, 26.3 percent.  Reid Johnson (2/5) and Bance (2/5) each had two threes and Cole Johnson had one. The team was nine for 16 from the free throw line, including Reid Johnson (3/5), Cole Johnson (4/6) and Chance Backer (1/1).

Reid Johnson topped the rebound list with seven, Masyn Remme had five, Cole Johnson and Castleberg had four each, and Chance Backer and Bance each had three.

Bance (4), Cole Johnson (3) and Reid Johnson (3) were the assist leaders and Cole Johnson (3) and Bance (3) led the team in steals.

Reid Johnson had a good shooting game in the loss to the Cardinals.  He hit eight of 16 from the field, four of nine from downtown and finished the game with 21 points.  He hit one of two from the free throw line, pulled down four rebounds, dished out two assists and came up with a team-high five steals.  Bance had three field goals, one three-pointer, and was one for two at the charity stripe as he came up with nine points.  Remme and Cole Johnson each had six points, Sam Backer and Henry Gathje each scored three points and Ben Fretland, Castleberg and Sam Stevens each had one bucket (two points).  Backer was one for one from beyond the arc.

Castleberg and Cole Johnson were tops in rebounds, with six, Chance Backer had four and Gathje three.  Castleberg had a team-high four assists and came up with three steals.  Ethan Ruskell came off the bench and had two steals.

Seventeen turnovers were recorded for the team.

“Against Lewiston-Altura, they jumped out to an early lead that we could never overcome,” commented DeBuhr.  “We battled from that point, but could never get back into the game.”

Tuesday the team was to travel to Preston to take on the Falcons and Friday the guys are at home against Rushford-Peterson.  Tuesday, Jan. 21, the team will travel to Cotter.
