“Defense and special teams played very well and put our team in a good position several times, but out offense couldn’t capitalize,” said head coach Jeff Johnson.  Final score for Friday’s Homecoming game was Caledonia 20, Chatfield 0.

When you look at the stats you wouldn’t “see” a 20-zip shutout.  The Gophers out-rushed the Warriors, 95 yards to 86 yards.  The passing yardage favored Caledonia 147-75, and the number of turnovers wouldn’t even give you the story of the game; Chatfield had four and Caledonia had three miscues.  It’s what they did with the turnovers that gives you the real story of the game.  Caledonia threw three interceptions and so did Chatfield, but Caledonia returned two of the interceptions for touchdowns.  Those two TDs turned into 13 of the 20 points that Caledonia scored in the game.

“Great game,” said stat-man Dave Dudek.  “The two INT-returns were the stab-in-the-back.  The last one, 94 yards, was just icing-on-the-cake that made it just look bad.  Great game,” he said again.

Seth Allen came up with two of the interceptions for the Chatfield defense.  Ben Roline had the other one.  Allen and Ben Brogan had pass break-ups as did Devontae Goldsmith.  Goldsmith also came up with a quarterback sack.

Nathan Goldsmith led the team with six solo tackles, while Gage Tuohy and Chance Backer each had five.  Goldsmith had two assisted tackles, Backer came up with seven assists and Tuohy added four assists.  Carson Larrabee had three solos and four assists, Manny Perez, Ben Roline and Devontae Goldsmith each had two solos and two assists.  Others “scoring” on defense: Allen (one solo, two assists), Tate Karver (1a), Jack Tuohy (1s), Jonathan Frank (1s,1a) and Zach Roline (1s,2a).  Larrabee and Backer each had a tackle for a loss.

Offensively, Reid Johnson was four for 17 passing for 75 yards.  On the receiving end of those passes were Ben Brogan (1, 26 yds), Backer (2, 42 yds) and Larrabee (1, 7 yds).

Gage Tuohy carried the ball 23 times for 81 yards, Larrabee had 47 yards on 10 carries, Johnson was a minus 27 yards on five carries and Backer had one touch for -5 yards.

Max Aug punted six times for an average of 38.0 yards, AJ Karver had one kickoff for 58 yards, and Brogan had three punt returns for an average of  9.3 yards/return.  Simon Schwartzentruber had one kickoff return (nine yds) and Brogan had two kickoff returns (14.5 yards).

Caledonia scored a touchdown in each of the second (1:08, pass), third (5:23, INT) and fourth (0:33, INT) quarters.

Next week the Gophers will travel to Lewiston-Altura (2-3), in two weeks they are at St. Charles (5-0, ranked No. 9 in AA) and host Dover-Eyota (Class AAA, 4-1) for the final regular season game on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
