The Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston gymnasts achieved a season-best team score on the uneven parallel bars as the 2019 campaign closed with a ninth place finish at the Section 1A Meet at Red Wing on Saturday, Feb. 16. Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa repeated as section champion.

"We were hoping for a team total of 110 and respectfully scored 108.225," said C/SG/H coach Jackie Johnson.

Three qualified for all-around scores, led by seventh grader Braelyn Lange (29.325), followed by freshman Brianna Johnson (26.525) and eighth grader Ayshia Gay (24.025).

The Warriors achieved their highest team score of the season on the bars (23.1). "The girls have worked hard on improving their skills and getting rid of stops in between moves," said Johnson. Lange led with a 6.750 with April Bauer receiving a 5.825, Cameryn Kruse 5.450, Johnson 5.075 and Gay 4.2.

The girls scored their team average on vault (31.775) with Johnson at 8.2 - the Warriors' highest individual score of the day. Lange received an 8.125, Gay 7.775, Kourtney Olson 7.675 and Sophie Burns 7.125.

The girls had a tough day on the balance beam (25.45) with only Lange having a no-fall routine (7.550).  Johnson received a 6.3. "It’s a hard event and can go either way," said Johnson.

The coach felt the girls performed well on their floor routines but were judged low (27.9). Comparing the section scoring to their season average, Johnson said, "Dropping down two points an event is hard when your girls performed well." Olson and Becky Meyer led, each at 7.025. Johnson had a 6.950.

"Both varsity and JV had a great season," concluded Johnson. "The teams’ scores have improved with varsity maintaining in the 106-to-108 range and JV with 92-to-97 range.

“It was great to be back in the gym this season, coaching a great bunch of girls along with coaches Helen Olson, Nancy Welsh and Pam Bauer."
