Jon Edward Nelson, 75, of Rochester, died peacefully on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at The Mayo Clinic, St. Marys campus.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1942, in Austin, to Floyd and Claire (Hedges) Nelson.

He was a 1960 graduate of Austin High School.

He went on to proudly serve his country as part of the Air Force, serving in Guam.

After his military service, he went to the University of Wisconsin-Stout and graduated with a degree in computer programming.

He worked for IBM as a computer programmer and also taught in the Department of Education at IBM. He enjoyed traveling to Japan to teach students about computer programming. He retired from IBM after 30 years of service.

On March 20, 1965, he married Katharine “Tinka” Tomhave.

Over the years, he enjoyed woodworking, visiting with people and had a passion for playing golf. Above all, he had a great love for his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a kind, loving, humorous and a soft-hearted, true gentleman.

He is survived by his children, Jennifer (John) Simon of Spring Valley and Andrew (Katie) Nelson of Lakeville, Minn.; grandchildren, Odin and Isaac Simon, Damion Buck, Dominique, Logan, Aaron, Gavin Nelson and Ryan Madsen; his loving partner, Helen Sheller of Rochester; cousin, Mary Wilson of Elk River, Minn., and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katharine “Tinka” and sister, Margo LaPerre.

A funeral service for him was held on Friday, July 20, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester with the Rev. Charles Ortloff officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood East Cemetery.
