Chatfield (No. 2, East) is one of four teams advancing to the Section 1AA softball team this week along with Zumbrota-Mazeppa (No. 2, West), Cotter (No. 1, East) and Rochester Lourdes (No. 1, West).

The Section 1AA tournament was scheduled to be played Tuesday and Thursday at Todd Field in Austin.

Chatfield advanced to the section tournament on Thursday, May 23, in the 1AA East sub-section finals. Chatfield lost to Cotter 5-0, then beat St. Charles, 9-5, for the “true second” spot. Wednesday, the Lady Gophers defeated Lewiston-Altura 1-0 in a 12-inning marathon to reach the finals.

St. Charles defeated L-A 7-0 in an elimination game on Thursday before losing to the Gophers in the “true second” game of the double-elimination competition.

In the 1AA West sub-section, Rochester Lourdes defeated Zumbrota-Mazeppa 1-0 for the West championship. Dover-Eyota beat Byron 11-1 in an elimination game, then lost to Z-M 5-2 for the West “true second” spot.

Chatfield downs L-A in 12 innings

It was a great high school softball game that took 12 innings to decide. Abby Nosbisch walked to start the 12th inning for Chatfield. She then went to second on a fielder’s choice hit by Lexi Chase, advanced to third on a walk to Belle Berg and then scored the winning run on Alanna Goetzinger’s single.

The Gophers had bases loaded in the eighth and 10th innings, but failed to score. All total, Chatfield left 11 baserunners on during the game. L-A just left two runners on base in its 12 innings of play.

Chatfield just had four hits in the game, one each for Goetzinger, Peyton Berg, Carlie Berge and Nosbisch. Nosbisch scored the winning run and Goetzinger had the winning RBI.

Chase got the win, throwing 141 pitches in her 12 innings of work. She allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out 21.

Sub-section championship

Chatfield only had two hits against the Lady Ramblers, both by Chase and both doubles. Those were the only baserunners that Chatfield had in the game. Gopher batters struck out 14 times. That is Chatfield’s second loss to Cotter this season.

Chase pitched 4-1/3 innings in the game, allowing three hits and three runs, none earned, while striking out six and walking none. Berge pitched the final 1-2/3 innings. She gave up one hit and two earned runs, while striking out one and walking three.

All five of Cotters runs were scored in the fifth inning as Cotter collected two hits, reached on three Chatfield errors, had a walk and a sacrifice bunt.
