The Rushford-Peterson volleyball team had a full schedule last week, traveling to Plainview-Elgin Millville (PEM) on Sept. 10, hosting Lewiston-Altura (L-A) on Sept. 12, and traveling to Wabasha-Kellogg for a Saturday invitational.

Gopher visit

The Lady Trojans made the trip west to Plainview for a hard-fought match with the PEM Lady Bulldogs. After dropping the first game 21-25, R-P got into a real slug-out with PEM before eventually losing 25-27. R-P then came roaring back to grab the third game in a 25-13 rout. But PEM rallied for the final set, triumphing 16-25 and taking the match 3-1.

On offense, Kaleah Davis was the top server for R-P, recording four aces. Alyvia Eide, Isabelle Kahoun and Lakyn Rasmussen each chipped in an ace. Davis and Kahoun slammed home eight kills each, while Rasmussen added seven. Kaylee Ruberg was credited with six kills, Alora Wilkemeyer had three, and Elly Malone contributed a single.

Defensively, Davis recorded the only R-P block of the match. Eide continued her leadership in digs, hustling for 31 on the night. Rasmussen followed with 14 digs, Malone added 10, and Kahoun contributed seven. Avalon Jacobson and Ruberg each had six digs, followed by Hailey Jenkins (three), Wilkemeyer (two) and Davis (one).

Cardinal matchup

The Lady Trojans returned home to host the Three Rivers Conference (TRC) leading L-A Cardinals. Normally, rainy weather has no effect on a volleyball match, but this day it did, as the R-P roof leaked enough to close down half the gym. The hard-hitting seniors from LA (there are nine in the varsity lineup) apparently weren’t fazed by the situation and jumped out to a 1-0 start with a 17-25 win over R-P. But the Lady Trojans came storming back, jumping out to an early lead in the second game, then fending off a comeback to win 25-19. Then L-A proved why they’re leading the TRC, handing R-P losses of 8-25 and 14-25 to close out the win.

Ruberg led all R-P servers with four aces, while Eide added a pair and Rasmussen a single. Davis was on fire at the net, notching 11 kills. Ruberg added seven of her own, while Rasmussen accounted for three kills, followed by Kahoun and Malone (two each) and Wilkemeyer (one).

Defensively, the Lady Trojans couldn’t muster a single block against the tall, heavy-hitting Cardinals. Eide continued to lead R-P diggers with 24 on the night. Other top defenders were Rasmussen with 10 digs, followed by Malone (nine), Kahoun (seven) Jacobson (six), Davis (five), Wilkemeyer (four), Ruberg (four) and Jenkins (two).

Falcon tourney

The Saturday (Sept. 14) tournament at Wabasha-Kellogg High School had the Lady Trojans playing against four opponents. R-P faced off against the Dover-Eyota squad and won a convincing 2-0 victory (25-16, 25-9). The Lady Trojans were in a true slugfest with Fillmore Central but took a 1-1 loss (27-25, 25-21). Norwood Young America put up even more of a fight, handing R-P a 0-2 loss (22-25, 19-25). R-P’s last match of the day was with the host Falcons. Though the Lady Trojans matched up well against W-K, they fell 1-2 (25-23, 15-25, 13-15).

Davis led all R-P servers, notching eight aces on the day. Ruberg recorded three aces, followed by four Lady Trojans who served a pair of aces: Eide, Kahoun, Malone and Rasmussen. Kills were plentiful for the Lady Trojans, and once again Davis led this category with 27 for the tourney. Ruberg was right behind with 23, Wilkemeyer amassed 15, and Rasmussen added ten. Also credited with kills were Malone (five), Kahoun (four) and Eide (one).

On defense, Davis continued to pave the way for R-P as she racked up seven blocks, while Ruberg contributed five and Wilkemeyer a single. Eide continued her torrid pace on digs, recording 74 for the four-game tourney. Malone had an impressive day with 45 digs, followed by Kahoun with 37. Also recording double-digit digs were Ruberg (17), Davis (12), Wilkemeyer (11), and Ronnenberg (10). Meanwhile, Alayna Helgemoe was credited with eight digs, followed by Avalon Jacobson (four) and Jenkins (three).

Standings and Schedule

After the weekend, the Lady Trojans are in ninth place (2-5-1) in the 12-team TRC. L-A continues to lead the conference with a 5-0 record, followed by Caledonia (4-0), W-K (4-2), PEM (3-0), Chatfield (3-3), St. Charles (2-1), FC (2-1-2) and Winona Cotter (2-3). Southland (1-4), LaCrescent-Hokah (0-4) and D-E (0-5) round out the TRC standings.

R-P visited LaCrescent on Monday, Sept 16, and then traveled to Winona Cotter on Sept. 17. We’ll have results of those matches in the next issue.
