The R-P volleyball team crammed three matches into a four-day stretch last week and emerged victorious in two. The Lady Trojans won a hard-fought home thriller against Dover Eyota on Monday, Oct 7, then traveled to St. Charles the very next day for another victory. Conference powerhouse Caledonia came to the R-P gym on Thursday, Oct. 10 to hand the Trojans ballers a loss and pad their perfect record in the TRC.

R-P vs. D-E

While the home stand against the visiting Eagles was lightly attended, fans who showed up certainly got their money’s worth in this thrilling victory. R-P won the first set 25-21, then relaxed a bit in the second match and fell 19-25. D-E rode that momentum into the third contest and emerged with a 20-25 win. But the Lady Trojans weren’t ready to concede, coming back to grab a 25-23 nail-biter victory. The ensuing tie-breaker put the icing on an exciting match, with the R-P ladies finally outlasting their D-E opponents in a 22-20 win.

Senior standout Kaleah Davis led R-P’s serving on the night, torching the Eagles for three aces. Lakyn Rasmussen, Hannah Ronnenberg, Hailey Jenkins, and Elly Malone each contributed a single ace. Davis also led the team in kills, racking up 10 against the Eagles. Freshman star Kaylee Ruberg added six kills, Alora Wilkemeyer had three, and Rasmussen added a pair.

Ruberg also shone on defense, stopping the D-E offense with five blocks, while Davis chipped in two blocks. Alyvia Eide was her usual hard-working self, scrambling for an impressive 36 digs. Malone was credited for 23 digs, Rasmussen had 14, Ronnenberg added 13, and Isabelle Kahoun racked up ten. Also credited with digs were Avalon Jacobson (8), Alayna Helgemoe (7), Davis (6), Wilkemeyer (3), Jenkins (2) and Ruberg (2).

R-P vs. St. Charles

As if one narrow victory wasn’t enough, the Lady Trojans traveled to the St. Charles gym the very next day for another slugfest. R-P notched a win (25-21) in the first set, then dropped a close one (23-25) to the Saints. The third set was even more hotly contested, with St. Charles finally squeaking out a 29-27 win. But R-P came roaring back, nabbing a 25-20 win in the fourth set, then hanging on for a 15-12 win in the tie-breaker.

Malone was the hot server on the night, racking up four aces and five service points. Kahoun added three aces and Ruberg tossed up two. Ruberg was on the attack all night, zipping the Saints for 13 kills. Davis was right behind with a dozen kills, while Rasmussen had seven, Wilkemeyer five, and Malone three.  Ruberg was also a defensive force, leading all R-P blockers with five. Davis and Wilkemeyer added a block each against St. Charles. Eide continued her leadership on digs, amassing 32 against the Saints. Malone was credited with 22 digs, Rasmussen had 17, and Kahoun added 15. Ruberg and Jenkins were credited with nine digs each, while Jacobson had four, Davis chipped in three, and Wilkemeyer had two and Emarie Jacobson added a single.

R-P vs. Caledonia

While Kaleah Davis and Avalon Jacobson were honored in a nice ceremony on Senior Night, the visiting Warriors stole all the limelight once play began. Caledonia leads the TRC and proved why on Thursday night, handing R-P losses of 9-25, 16-25, and 14-25.

Malone had the only ace of the night versus the Warriors. But R-P had its share of kills; Davis led the way with three kills, Helgemoe, Ruberg and Malone had two each, and Wilkemeyer, Ronnenberg and Rasmussen each chipped in a single kill. On defense, Wilkemeyer had a pair of blocks and Ruberg a single. Malone led all R-P players with a dozen digs, Eide had eleven, and Kahoun eight. Also credited with digs were Jenkins (five), Ronnenberg (four), Rasmussen (four), Davis (three), and Ruberg (three).
