Lady Trojans split matches

The R-P volleyball team only faced a pair of opponents last week, but those two matches pitted evenly-matched teams that fought for every point. The Lady Trojans lost a bang-up contest against the visiting Lewiston-Altura Cardinals Sept 25, but rebounded to triumph over Dover-Eyota just two days later. The two-game home stand was part of a busy week of Homecoming activities for the R-P ballers.

R-P vs. L-A

After a tough loss at the Cardinal gym Sept 13, the Lady Trojans were ready to serve up some revenge at home. After a 25-21 victory in the first game, which wasn’t as close as the score suggests, it looked as if they might get just that. But L-A grabbed a heartbreaking win in a marathon second game, emerging with a 27-29 win. That loss seemed to deflate R-P a bit, and the Cardinals jumped on them in the third game for a 17-25 victory. The Lady Trojans fought much harder in the fourth contest, but L-A pulled away in the end for an 18-25 win and the match.

Jaelyn Connaughty and Kaleah Davis were a one-two serving punch for R-P. Connaughty plucked the Cardinals for five aces, while Davis added four of her own. Megan Oian and Lauren Lawston each added a pair. Lawston has been on fire at the net lately and this match was no different; she torched L-A with 14 kills on the night. Kjersta Hinz and Davis lit it up with seven kills apiece, while Kaitlyn Bieberdorf and Kaylee Ruberg each had three. Libero Alyviah Eide was responsible for setting up her teammates with 17 passes, while Lawston notched nine, Julissa Trejo pitched in six and Oian added four.

On defense, Ruberg was the only Lady Trojan to record a block against the potent Cardinal offense. Lawston was credited with 18 digs on the night and Eide had 17. Peyton Hoiness pitched in with seven digs, and Connaughty and Trejo each contributed five.

R-P vs. D-E

With only a night’s rest, the Lady Trojans hosted the Dover-Eyota Eagles for another hard-fought Three Rivers Conference match.  While R-P jumped out to a quick lead by besting D-E in the first two games (25-10, 25-23), the Eagles clawed back, claiming victory in the third match (26-28) and the fourth (23-25). That forced a fifth game tiebreaker, which the Lady Trojans won in convincing fashion, 15-8.

Connaughty was R-P’s top server on the night, recording three aces. Trejo and Ruberg each had a pair of ace serves, while Lawston and Hoiness added one apiece. Lawston fried the Eagles with 18 kills, while Bieberdorf and Davis joined her in the double-digit kill club with 10 apiece. Hinz pitched in eight kills, and Ruberg and Connaughty each had four. Eide continued as R-P’s top passer, with 19 on the evening.

Blocks were hard to come by against D-E. Connaughty, Davis, Ruberg and Hinz were each credited with a single block. But digs kept the Lady Trojans alive in the match; Eide was credited with 25 and Hoiness shined with 21. Lawston fought her way to 14 digs, Connaughty was right behind her with 13, and Lakyn Rasmussen notched an impressive dozen. Oian came up with eight digs, Elly Malone joined the defensive effort with seven digs, Ruberg added six, and Trejo and Bieberdorf were each credited with five.

The Lady Trojans hosted Chatfield Tuesday, Sept 2, then travel to Fillmore Central Thursday, Sept. 4. We’ll have results of those matches in the next issue.
