Lady Trojans split tourney matches to end season

The Rushford-Peterson volleyball team saw their season come to a close last week. After a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lanesboro in the opening round of the Section 1A tournament, the Lady Trojans faced top-ranked Mabel-Canton just three days later. The Cougars proved their #1 ranking is legitimate by sweeping R-P in the match.

R-P vs. Lanesboro

The #17 seed Lady Trojans opened the tournament with a road trip to the Lanesboro gym on Monday, Oct. 21, to face the #16 seed Burros. The hard-fought victory proved the teams were evenly matched, with R-P working hard for wins in the first two sets (25-18, 25-22), and Lanesboro coming back to take the next two (25-23, 25-13). But R-P prevailed in a tough tie-breaker, emerging with a 15-13 win to advance to the next round.

Kaleah Davis led all R-P servers with six aces on the night. Lakyn Rasmussen contributed four aces, while Kaylee Ruberg chipped in three and Alyvia Eide added a pair. Davis was also dominant at the net, torching the Burros for 14 kills, and Ruberg continued to be an offensive force by racking up six kills.  Alora Wilkemeyer, Elly Malone, and Rasmussen each contributed three kills, while Hannah Ronnenberg had a single kill.

Ruberg paced R-P on defense, rejecting the Burros on five blocks. Wilkemeyer added a pair of blocks, and Davis and Rasmussen were each credited with a single. Eide added 24 digs to her season total, Malone hustled for 17 digs, and Isabelle Kahoun had 11. Also credited with digs were Hailey Jenkins (7), Avalon Jacobson (6), Davis (5), Alayna Helgemoe (4), Ronnenberg (4), Ruberg (4) and Rasmussen (4).

R-P vs. Mabel-Canton

Visiting one of the top Class A teams in the state in their home gym is never easy, and the Cougars were showing no kindness to the Lady Trojans in their second-round Section tourney matchup on Thursday, Oct. 24. M-C breezed to a 7-25 win in the first set, let up only slightly in a 12-25 victory in the second, then closed out the night with a 9-25 win in the final set.

The sturdy M-C defense allowed no aces from R-P servers on the night. Kills were slightly easier to come by, and Davis led the Lady Trojans with eight for the match. Ronnenberg zipped the Cougars with four kills, while Wilkemeyer and Ruberg had a kill apiece.

Defense was equally difficult to muster against the hard-hitting Cougars; Ronnenberg had the only R-P block on the night, as M-C zipped the Lady Trojans for a team-total 45 kills. It’s a rare night when Eide isn’t well into double-digits for digs, but she could only scramble for eight against the Cougars. Ronnenberg was right behind with seven digs, Helgemoe contributed six digs, and Malone and Jenkins each had five. Also credited with digs were Kahoun (4), Rasmussen (3), Jacobson (2), and Ruberg (2).

R-P finished the season with 17-27 overall record and a 15-21 Three Rivers Conference (TRC) mark. The Lady Trojans were 9th in the 12-team TRC.
