The Lady Trojans are playing some of their best volleyball of the season right now, and it’s showing in hard-fought battles against tough opponents. Last week they faced perennial rival Chatfield at home, then traveled to face a balanced and aggressive Fillmore Central team. R-P triumphed at home, then came up short in their away match.

R-P vs. Chatfield

The Lady Trojans vs. the Gophers was a match made in home game heaven. After falling to Chatfield in the first game 19-25, the R-P girls came roaring back. They won the next game in convincing fashion (25-17), and after a third game full of aggressive offense and stellar defense, the Lady Trojans grabbed a second victory (25-16) and seemed well on the way to breezing past the Gophers. But the final game was a true dogfight, complete with ties, momentum swaps, and thrilling/heartbreaking points. But the R-P girls weren’t going to be denied; they hung on for a 31-29 victory. It was as fine a display of mental toughness as the team has shown all season.

Peyton Hoiness was R-P’s service leader, torching the Gophers with four aces. Kaleah Davis contributed three booming aces, and Megan Oian chipped in a pair. Alyvia Eide, Julissa Trejo and Lauren Lawston each served a single ace. The Lady Trojans exhibited a well-balanced offense on the night. Kaitlyn Bieberdorf notched five kills and Lawston was credited for four. Lawston was R-P’s leading three-set passer, she amassed 13 on the night.

Defensively, the Lady Trojans spread stats across the team. Hinz was the block’s leader with three, and Ruberg, Davis and Connaughty each had a single block. After their thrilling home win against Chatfield, the Lady Trojans made the trip to the gym of conference rival and powerhouse Fillmore Central. R-P put forth a solid effort in the first game, but fell 18-25. The second match found the green and gold  back in fighting form, and they triumphed in a hard-fought, 25-23 battle. The effort of that win was evident in the follow-up game, and Lady Trojans dropped the match 12-25. But R-P came ready to play for the next matchup, swapping points and momentum swings with FC before finally falling 24-26.

Connaughty is becoming more dominant in all facets of the games as the season progresses. She was R-P’s serving leader, zapping the Falcons with four aces on the night. Eide added three aces, Lawston chipped in a pair, and Davis had a single ace. Lawston continued her aggressive offensive play with nine kills against the Falcons, Connaughty, Bieberdorf, and Hinz racked up five kills each, while Davis and Ruberg each had a pair. Eide continued to set her teammates up with 16 passes, and Julissa Trejo had seven.

Blocks were hard to come by for the Trojans on the night. Hinz had a pair, and Davis had a single. Lawston has played tougher defense as the season has progressed, and she was credited with 22 digs against FC. Eide was her solid self with 19 digs, while Trejo contributed 14 and Connaughty added a dozen. Hoiness scrambled for six digs, and Bieberdorf, Davis and Ruberg had five digs apiece.
